It's on 1 of my list. Each entry below is what I wrote about it there, with my verdict on that list, the fullest first.
People say “Astoria” like it is one place. It is not. The Greek food splits roughly along two spines, and knowing the difference will save you a bad night.
Ditmars Boulevard, up at the top of the neighborhood near the last stop on the N/W, is the loud one. This is where the seafood tavernas live, where the sidewalks fill up on summer weekends, and where you will wait for a table with forty other people who all had the same idea. It is a scene. A wonderful, garlic-scented, slightly chaotic scene.
31st Avenue and the Broadway blocks below it are quieter. This is where the neighborhood actually eats on a Tuesday. Smaller rooms, older waiters who have worked the same tables for twenty years, and prices that do not assume you came from Manhattan. If Ditmars is the party, this is the family dinner.
I love both. But if you only have one meal in you, the choice is simple. Do you want the spectacle, or the secret? Let me make the case for each.
