The Cloisters (99 Margaret Corbin Drive, Fort Tryon Park) is a branch of the Met that houses medieval European art and architecture in a building constructed from pieces of actual medieval monasteries. It sits at the very top of Manhattan in Fort Tryon Park, surrounded by gardens, overlooking the Hudson River.
It feels like you’ve been teleported to southern France. The unicorn tapestries alone are worth the trip, and the herb garden is one of the most peaceful places in the city. Admission is $30 (included with Met admission, valid for three consecutive days).
Most tourists never make it up here because it’s far from Midtown. Take the A train to 190th Street. The walk through Fort Tryon Park to the museum is beautiful.
