Joe Allen has been the actual Broadway clubhouse since 1965, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays it opens at 11:30, which puts it squarely in matinee range. This is where the cast eats. The walls are famous for the “flop wall,” a collection of posters from shows that closed fast, which is a very theater-people kind of dark humor and one of my favorite rooms in the city to sit in.
The food is honest American comfort. The burger is the thing people whisper about, the meatloaf is real, and nothing here is trying to reinvent anything. What you are paying for is the room, the history, and staff who will absolutely get you out in time if you tell them the plan. It is the least touristy place on this whole list, which after a lap through Times Square feels like a small miracle.
