John’s is set inside a former church on 44th, coal-fired ceilings and stained glass and all, and it opens at 11:30. The pizza is thin-crust, brick-oven, no slices, whole pies only, which is actually perfect for a matinee. You order, it comes fast, you split it, you leave. No wait for a table if you go early, no fussy small plates, just a good char and a two-minute walk to nearly every theater on 44th and 45th.
Get the classic margherita and one with sausage, and if the ceiling of that room does not make you tilt your head back, check your pulse. It is the most photogenic pizza dinner in the district, and the price is gentle for how central it is.
