Rules for Visiting Dog Parks in NYC

Before taking your pup to a dog park in New York City, you’ll need to be mindful of a few rules.

Visit New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Dog Licenses website to obtain a dog license. You may also get an application at a veterinarian, animal shelter or pet shop.
  • Dogs must be leashed (no more than six feet long) unless they’re at a dog run or a designated off-leash area during specified times.
  • Remember to pick up after your dog and toss doggie bags in the proper trash bins, let’s all do our part to preserve the best dog parks in New York City.
  • Dogs are not allowed on playgrounds, in zoos, fountains, ball fields, sport courts, swimming pools/facilities, bathing areas or beaches
  • Read the complete list of rules & regulations before visiting the dog parks in New York City to be better prepared.

1

Washington Square Park Dog Park

The dog run at Washington Square Park | it

this dog park provides a perfect urban oasis for dogs to play and socialize. It’s open daily, typically from 6am to 12am, offering flexibility for early risers and night owls alike. The park features separate areas for large and small dogs, ensuring a safe environment for pups of all sizes.

With its central location, close to charming cafes and dog-friendly restaurants it’s a great spot to relax and meet fellow dog lovers. Between you and me, some days I need a push to get out the door (winter, anyone?) and use my dog as an excuse. On days that I’m feeling demotivated I make an effort to visit the dog run at Washington Square because it always brings me joy.

Tompkins Square Dog Run

Tompkins Square Dog Run | it

Best known for being the first dog park in New York City, Tompkins Square Dog Run has it all. There’s a lot of space for running around, separate sections for large and small dogs, wading pools and even hoses to clean your pup before heading out.

This beloved dog park in NYC underwent a half million dollar renovation in 2008, which greatly improved outdated equipment. As such, the park floods with locals most days of the week. It’s especially fun to visit during the Halloween dog parade when pooches don their best costumes.

Note. Tompkins Square Dog Run does not allow pups over 6 months of age unless they are spayed or neutered. This done in an effort to reduce mounting which can lead to dog fights.

Chelsea Waterside Dog Run

ParkChelseaFree

Chelsea Waterside Dog Run is a nice change of pace from the New York City dog parks mentioned so far on this list. The reason? It has an obstacle course for pups (boulders, hills!). Located at the scenic Hudson River Park, it’s a fantastic spot for dogs of all sizes to enjoy some off-leash fun.

Open daily from 6am to 1 am, it is great for both early risers and those who prefer evening strolls. This New York City dog run is particularly known for its thoughtful design, featuring separate areas for large and small dogs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for every pup.

My advice The park undergoes scheduled cleanings daily from 10-11 AM, 2-3 PM, and 6-7 PM to maintain a clean and healthy environment.

Central Park

ParkCentral ParkFree

Central Park, people walk their dogs in a Central Park meadow surrounded by fall foliage.

It probably comes as no surprise that the best park in New York City is one of the best spots to let your pooch run wild. Dogs are free to explore off-leash from 6am to 9am, and are welcome on-leash outside those hours as well.

Though there are no enclosed dog runs, there are 23 particularly dog-friendly areas scattered throughout the Park. Please note there are places where your pooch isn’t allowed regardless of times. For more info on these I suggest checking out Central Park’s dog owners guide.

The Mall and Bethesda Fountain are great areas to let your dog run around, just note that dogs are not allowed in Sheep Meadow (the area is fenced off to prevent access).

Everyone thinks they have the greatest dog on earth. And none of them are wrong.

Sirius Dog Run New York City

Named after a heroic bomb sniffing yellow lab who lost his life during the 9/11 attacks, this dog run has become one of the most popular dog parks in NYC.

This entire dog run is fully paved and comes equipped with a water fountain for dogs and a hose for cleaning. Plus, a wading pool is available during the warmer months. Take in the breathtaking views of the Hudson River while your pooch burns off some energy. Bring a cup coffee or a friend and you’ll be enjoying yourself almost as much as your furry friend.

Jemmy's Dog Run at Madison Square Park

Jemmy's Dog Run at Madison Square Park, people and their dogs gather in a fenced dog run in a city park with cherry blossoms and skyscrapers in the background.

Named after U.S. President James “Jemmy” Madison, Jemmy’s Dog Run is one of the most popular dog parks in New York City. The park is fenced in and there’s plenty of trees and umbrellas offering shady respite during the summer. Offering two off-leash areas (to separate large and small dogs), my favorite thing about Jemmy’s Dog Run is the gravel surface.

Grave drains well, so there’s no need to worry about your pup catching a funky disease by drinking out of dirty puddles. It’s also much easier on your dog’s joints than concrete surfaces, which is why this one of the best dog parks in NYC for large dogs.

West 72nd Street Dog Park | Best Dog Runs New York City

I currently live on the Upper West side and find the entire neighborhood to be very dog-friendly. There’s plenty of great spots to let my dog run, but my favorite is the 72nd Street Dog Run in Riverside Park. The park is typically open from 6:00am until 1:00am, and seems to be well-maintained. Plus, the folks that frequent the park are kind and the pups are well-mannered.

This dog run is part of the Riverside Park Conservancy and has been serving the community of dog owners in the southern end of the park since 1995. It’s known for its active community involvement and close cooperation with the Conservancy and the NYC Parks Department.

Little West Dog Park

ParkBattery ParkFree
Worth it

Located in the hip Battery Park area, Little West is a popular New York City dog park separated into two runs (one for small dogs and one for large dogs). Both areas are spacious enough, but the area for large dogs is about twice the size of the smaller one.

As a dog owner I can appreciate the fact that this NYC dog park is always clean, requiring very little post-play clean up. But please bear in mind that if your hound has sensitive paws you might want to think twice before visiting on a scorching day because of the cement ground.

Hillside Dog Park in Brooklyn

ParkBrooklyn HeightsFree
Worth it

Spanning 1.4 acres, Hillside is one of the larger dog parks in New York City, providing a lot of green space for large and small dogs alike. Located a stone’s throw from the Brooklyn Promenade, this NYC dog park is perfect for adventurous dogs that love exploring wooded areas.

The entire area is fenced in so you can sit back and relax on a nearby bench while your pup wears themself out. There’s also a second fenced area specifically for smaller dogs, making this a great dog park to take a puppy you’d like to socialize with other dogs.

Carl Schurz Dog Run’s Instagram page is a must follow for anyone who gets boosts of serotonin from puppy pictures. Dogs in all sorts of outfits, shapes and sizes consider this one of the it and tag them on Instagram to show their love.

Located in the Upper East Side near the East River, this park has dog runs for large and small dogs alike. It is also resurfaced twice a year ensuring a safe surface for your four legged friends paws.

Domino Park Dog Run

ParkWilliamsburgFree
Worth it

Domino Park is home to one of the it for four-legged and two-legged visitors alike. The views of Manhattan are unrivaled and the peaceful waterfront vibes are a nice touch.

My advice Unlike most of the dog parks mentioned on this list, Domino Park’s Dog Run doesn’t have a separate area for small dogs. So if you have a small pooch that can’t hang with the big boys, this might not be the best NYC dog park for you.

Prospect Park

ParkProspect Park/Park SlopeFree
Worth it

Prospect Park is a favorite dog park in New York City among locals. The Long Meadow is spacious and offers off-leash hours from 5am to 9am and from 9pm to 1am. The best part is the dog beach (you read that right) which is a roped-off sandy stretch of beach specifically reserved for dogs that want to take a dip in the lake.

Also worth mention, the dog community that meets at Prospect Park is one of the friendliest I’ve come across. This a great place to meet new friends (both two-legged and four-pawed). Join the FIDO community to stay up to date on fun events and social opportunities.

Yes, but dogs must be leashed in public parks unless they’re in a dog run or designated off-lease area.
