Winter in New York City is an ideal time to visit the Big Apple for those who like to explore new cities at a slower pace without mind-boggling crowds. As the busy holiday season winds down, popular attractions like museums and observation decks are blissfully quieter.
Better still, hotels and airfare are more affordable, making it easier to indulge in a luxurious stay or extended visit. The only disadvantage to visiting New York City in winter is planning for inclement weather. But as long as you brace for the cold (I’ll give you some tips below), you’re bound to have a great time.
From iconic landmarks dusted in snow to cherished holiday traditions worth the wait, let’s cover the best winter activities in New York City.
Note from Antonina about 2024 Christmas Itineraries: Some longtime readers have asked if I’ll be offering the custom 4-day itineraries that sold out last year. Sadly, I won’t have the time to make those this year (pregnancy, I tell you), so instead I’m offering the personalized 4 Day Itinerary I created for my own family and friends.
It’s hefty (30 pages to be exact) but it includes non-negotiable Christmas activities and a handful of iconic NYC landmarks you can’t afford to miss if you’re visiting NYC for four days (in addition to personalized restaurant recommendations).
It took me five years to perfect the guide but I think it will help you make the most use of your time in the city.
Due to limited time and energy (naps are a daily occurrence around here now!) I’m limiting the guide to 50 sales so that I can personally address snafus and answer questions. As of August 23, 2024 there are 23 guides remaining. You can find more information here.

Visiting New York City? If you haven’t decided where to stay (yet) check out our helpful guide on Where to Stay in New York City (The best neighborhoods for first timers +3 to avoid). Don’t have time? Here’s my favorite hotel in NYC, hands down.
Go Ice Skating in Central Park
Website: Wollman Rink
Address: 830 5th Ave, New York, NY
When it comes to quintessential NYC winter activities, ice skating at the iconic Wollman Rink is hard to beat. Tucked in the southeastern nook of Central Park, the city skyline serves as a magnificent backdrop to the most famous ice rink in New York City.
The rink is open from October to March so there’s plenty of time to enjoy the experience after the holiday crowds depart, making it a worthwhile addition to any proper New York City winter bucket list.
Local’s Recommendation: The Christmas rush hits Wollman Rink hard, especially during weekends. Time your visit for a weekday if your schedule is flexible.
Admire the Holiday Train Show at New York Botanical Garden
Website: New York Botanical Garden
Address: 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx, NY
The Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden is one of the most popular winter activities in New York City for families. A local tradition for more than 30 years, admire the epic display of model trains weaving through a meticulously crafted miniature landscape of New York City.
The immersive walk-through experience is dotted with iconic New York landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and Rockefeller Center, all recreated using natural materials like bark, leaves, and twigs. Everyone in the family is bound to enjoy this incredible New York City winter event.
Enjoy the Winter Jazzfest
Dates: January 9 – 15, 2025
Winter Jazzfest is a week-long celebration of jazz that draws music lovers from around the world. Held annually in January, the festival takes place in venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn, from intimate clubs to large venues. A highlight of winter in New York City, the Jazzfest transforms the city into a mecca for music enthusiasts.
With a lineup including legendary musicians and emerging artists, performances range from classic jazz to avant-garde. The festival sells out most years, if interested, you can see the full lineup here.
Local’s Recommendation: If you’re into jazz but won’t be in town for the Jazzfest, consider checking out some world-class jazz clubs in New York City.
Celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year
Dates: January 29, 2025 – February 15, 2025
Address: Chinatown, New York, NY
The Chinese Lunar New Year is a festive celebration marking the beginning of the lunar calendar. Festivities commence January 29, 2025 and culminate on February 15, 2025 with a grand parade full of traditional dances, martial arts performances and dragons.
Join the celebration as local communities usher in the Year of the Snake in 2025. The streets of Chinatown are filled with exciting treats and beautiful decorations in the two weeks leading up to the parade. Experiencing the festivities in person is a must-do winter activity in New York City.
Peruse The New York Public Library’s Special Exhibit
Website: New York Public Library
Address: 476 5th Ave, New York, NY
When the colossal New York Public Library opened in 1911 it was the largest marble building in the country. It took 16 years to build the architectural marvel and I think everyone should make an effort to see it at least once.
Apart from books, the New York Public Library has an extraordinary collection of rare items on public display for the first time since its founding in 1895.
The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures is free to tour, which is mind-blowing, considering you can see Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence (one of 26 known copies in the world).
Other highlights include The Gutenberg Bible, Charles Dickens’s Desk and Chair, Virginia Woolf’s Walking Stick, the original Winnie-the-Pooh dolls that inspired the beloved children’s story and Malcolm X’s Briefcase and diaries.
All this to say, touring the exhibit is one of the best things to do in NYC in winter (plus, it’s a great way to escape the cold).
Explore Central Park in the Snow
Website: Central Park
Address: New York, NY
If you notice snow in the forecast while visiting New York City in winter, make Central Park your top priority. The park is downright magical during the first snowfall of the year.
If you’re solo, pop in some headphones and let the Christmas music roll while you stroll meandering paths, it’s a very peaceful experience. If you’d like to go the extra mile, make reservations at the beautifully decorated Tavern on the Green for lunch or dinner (the food is surprisingly good considering the prime location).
Whether you’re skating at Wollman Rink or taking a leisurely stroll with your special someone in tow, exploring a snow-dusted Central Park is one of the most iconic things to do in New York City in winter.
Attend the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden
Website: New York Botanical Garden
Address: 2900 Southern Blvd, Bronx, NY
The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden transforms the conservatory with thousands of stunning orchids of every conceivable shape, size, and color. The highly-anticipated New York City winter event has been running for more than 20 years.
Every year, the garden partners with local designers to showcase unique exhibitions and rare orchids from around the world. The artists are given free reign to showcase their version of an orchid paradise centered around specific themes (in 2024, the theme was fashion).
If you’re visiting New York City in the winter with a green thumb, it’s hard to think of a better way to spend the afternoon. Sign up for some of the workshops and lectures offered if you’d like to learn more about orchid care and conservation.
Catch a Performance at the Lincoln Center
Website: Lincoln Center
Address: Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY
A great way to stay warm while visiting New York City in winter is by attending a world-class performance at the Lincoln Center. Founded in 1950, the cultural hub houses the city’s most revered cultural institutions like the New York Philharmonic, New York City Opera, New York City Ballet, and the Julliard School of Music.
Ideal for romantic date nights, seeing performances at the Lincoln Center is on constant rotation in my New York City winter itinerary. The two most popular winter performances are George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker and the New York Film Festival hosted mid-January.
Enjoy Cocktails With a View
It goes without saying that enjoying a rooftop bar while spending winter on New York City is a must-do experience, but if you’re prone to the cold, why not try an enclosed rooftop back instead? I recommend the Mo Lounge at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
The posh bar offers unparalleled views of Central Park, making it an ideal spot for romantic pre-dinner drinks. I’d skip the food (unless you’d like to splurge) and stick with cocktails at this locale, but the adventure is up to you!
Another great option is the Westlight Rooftop Bar in Brooklyn, which offers epic views of the Manhattan skyline but scoring a reservation is no easy feat. If you’re lucky enough to get in, read: 15 Great Things to Do in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Enjoy the City’s Best Holiday Lights
As a local, there’s nothing I love more than December in New York City because the city transforms into a winter wonderland. The magical holiday feeling gets me every time! As such, I’ve spent the past six years on the hunt for the best Christmas decorations in New York City, read: 15 Epic Spots for Christmas Decorations In New York City.
Admire St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Website: St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Address: 5th Ave, New York, NY
Located right off 5th Avenue, St. Patrick’s Cathedral has been stopping people in their tracks since its completion in 1879. Welcoming more than 5 million visitors per year, the Neo-Gothic cathedral is impossible to miss.
As the seat of the Archbishop of New York, St. Patrick’s attracts 5 million visitors a year, making it the most visited church in New York City. Admiring the interior is a no-brainer, so swing by if the doors are open.
Better still, if you’re visiting in New York City during winter, try scoring tickets for Christmas Mass. Whether you’re a devout believer or trying to appease your mother-in-law, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
Explore the Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, better known as The Met, is one of the most popular museums in the world. Founded in 1870, it houses more than two million works spanning 5,000 years. You’ll get a chance to admire the splendors of ancient Egypt and contemporary paintings in one afternoon.
The vast art collection at the Met attracts 6 million visitors each year, making it the most visited museum in NYC. Located along the edge of Central Park, The Met is a must-visit destination winter attraction in New York City for art lovers.

Explore the Winter Village at Bryant Park
Website: Winter Village at Bryant Park
Address: 41st Street and, 6th Ave, New York
Bryant Park is a worthwhile destination year-round, but there’s something truly special about the winter season when the park transforms into a European-inspired holiday market. Home to more than 100 vendors selling crafts out of endearing glass-enclosed stalls, the market has a few things going for it.
Dwarfed by Midtown Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers, the market plays host to one of the most iconic Christmas trees in New York City and the largest free skating rink in town (skate rentals clock in at a steep $36 though, so bring your own if you have them).
Vendors span the gamut, from hand-painted ornaments to wooden chopsticks repurposed as bowls, you’ll find a plethora of unique souvenirs and holiday gifts. Admire the tree, glide around the ice rink or window shop the various stalls. Whatever your speed, you’re bound to have a great time at Bryant Park while visiting New York City in winter.
Take Advantage of Broadway Week
Website: Broadway
Address: Theater District, New York, NY
Planning a winter vacation to New York City has many perks, chief among them is seeing a Broadway Show without worrying about sold-out performances and inflated prices. Better still, during Broadway Week you can score 2-for-1 tickets for select shows. If you’re a Broadway buff, winter in NYC just got better.

Eat Your Way Through Essex Market
Website: Essex Market
Address: 88 Essex St, New York, NY
The Essex Market has been around since 1940 officially (unofficially since the 1880s), serving as a culinary gathering place for New Yorkers for 80 years. More than 30 vendors call the three-story market home. So, if you’re looking for a fun winter activity in NYC, swing by the market to rest your legs.
Order a bite and make your way to the upstairs seating area. The floor-to-ceiling windows are perfect for watching the stormy weather outside while you warm up with a hot coffee or tea.
Hop Aboard the Holiday Nostalgia Train
Website: Holiday Nostalgia Train
Dates: Saturdays in December
During weekends in December the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) partners with the New York Transit Museum to offer New Yorkers a chance to time travel. How? By running vintage subway cars on the F line for an experience called the Holiday Nostalgia Train.
I mean, riding in vintage trains is the last thing you’d expect to find on a list of the best things to do in New York City during winter, but alas it’s one of the most memorable. Better still, it doesn’t cost more than the standard subway fare ($2.90), which is a small price to pay for such a cool experience.
Find an Ugly Sweater at a Local Thrift Shop
Going thrift shopping seems to be high on many fashionista’s bucket lists while visiting NYC. As to be expected in the fashion capital of the world, there are a ton of great thrift shops in NYC. If you’re prepping for the holiday season and are visiting New York City in the winter, I suggest picking up a unique Christmas sweater!
Participate in a Show Recording
There are a handful of shows filmed with live audiences in NYC, like Saturday Night Live, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and Late Night with Seth Meyers. You can attend show recordings for free if you score tickets in advance.
It might seem like a long shot, but I’ve attended 50% of the shows I applied to, so I highly recommend giving the lottery a shot if it interests you. Plus, your chances go up if you’re visiting New York City in winter after the holiday crowds depart (think mid-January through March).
Celebrate Valentine’s Day in NYC
Date: February 14, 2025
Paris is billed as the most romantic city in the world and while that may be true, NYC is no stranger to a little romance every now and then. Home to world-renowned restaurants, intimate jazz clubs and soaring observation decks, celebrating Valentine’s Day in NYC is a treat. Cheer on the New York Knicks or Rangers
Website: New York Knicks
Address: 4 Pennsylvania Plaza, New York, NY
The NBA season runs from October to April, aligning perfectly with the winter season in New York City. As such, catching an NBA game at the Madison Square Garden (home to the New York Knicks) is a great call. Admission varies by game, but you can often score a decent deal. The NY Rangers hockey team also plays in Madison Square so there’s always a game to see. Here’s the schedule for the Knicks & Rangers.
Tips for Visiting NYC in Winter
- Proper attire and shoes are a must, read: What to Wear in New York City in the Winter (+Packing List) & 10 Best Shoes for Walking Around New York City (By Season)
- Bring lip balm & moisturizer: Winters in New York City are dry and cold. Add the raging industrial heaters to the mix and you’re bound to need quality lip balm and moisturizer. Lip balm is a personal thing, but if helpful, here’s the best one I’ve found to date (and it’s cheap!).
- Be mindful of the ice: If you’re visiting New York City in winter be sure to keep an eye on the weather, if it drops below 32°F there’s a possibility of ice on the streets. What this means for you — pack these handy things and keep an eye out for ice (especially when using stairs).
- Portable charger: Cold weather depletes batteries (think cellphones and cameras) quicker than you’d expect, so when heading out for the day make sure you’re at full charge and pick up one of these.
