Chelsea Market (75 9th Avenue, Chelsea) opened in 1997 in the old Nabisco factory where Oreos were invented. It’s the food hall that all other New York food halls are measured against, and most of them fall short.
What to eat. Los Tacos No. 1 has tacos that are $4-5 each and legitimately some of the best in Manhattan. The adobada and the nopal are my go-to order. The line can be 20 minutes on a Saturday, and it moves fast. Worth it every time.
The Lobster Place is a full seafood market with a raw bar where you can eat oysters and lobster at stand-up tables. A dozen oysters run $24-36 depending on the variety. The lobster roll is $28 and stuffed with an unreasonable amount of lobster.
Dickson’s Farmstand Meats is a whole-animal butcher shop that also makes sandwiches. The brisket sandwich ($16) is absurdly good.
The downside. Chelsea Market gets crushed on weekends. The narrow hallways become a slow-moving river of people. Go on a weekday before noon and you’ll have a completely different experience. Tuesday at 11am is peak Chelsea Market enjoyment.
It’s true what they say about kids being some of the harshest critics, so in order to avoid any scrutiny might I suggest a food hall? One of the best kid-friendly dining halls in New York City is none other than the popular Chelsea Market.
