Jack’s Wife Freda is a popular restaurant that merges South African and Israeli cuisine. Sounds like an unusual combo, until you realize the founders are husband-and-wife duo, Dean and Maya Jankelowitz (from South Africa and Israel respectively).
Named after Dean’s grandparents, Jack and Freda, this chic SoHo brunch restaurant is a love letter to comforting childhood meals. For brunch, I’m partial to the green shakshuka (soft baked eggs, green tomatillo shakshuka, challah toast) and rosewater waffle (lebanese yogurt, mixed berries and honey syrup).
Beyond inspired meals, the welcoming atmosphere and great vibes earn Jack’s Wife Fredaspot on our list of the best brunch in SoHo.
My adviceDon’t leave without trying Naom’s Malva Pudding, an African sponge cake soaked in sweet caramel pudding with a side of whipped cream, it’s a very memorable cap to the meal.
224 Lafayette Street, SoHo (plus other locations). Mediterranean-influenced brunch that’s consistently good across all locations. The shakshuka ($18) is the dish that put them on the map: eggs baked in spicy tomato sauce with feta and served with challah bread for dipping. The green shakshuka ($19) with spinach and leeks is even better in my opinion. Rosewater waffle ($17) is light and floral and different from every other waffle in the city.
The Lafayette location is the original and has the most character. They take walk-ins but it helps to put your name in on Yelp waitlist before you arrive.
Stepping into the cozy SoHo location of Jack’s Wife Freda is a joy, thanks to its blue and white decor and floral arrangements. The menu is a delightful fusion of influences, featuring dishes like the beloved green shakshuka and the flavorful Madame Freda (my favorite!).
The welcoming ambiance, friendly staff, and inventive culinary creations make Jack’s Wife Freda one of the best restaurants in SoHo. Plus, there’s always the chance you’ll run into a celebrity!
