Here is a thing nobody warns you about Midtown. The bagel is easy. The line is not. My husband and I lived in New York for six years, and for a good stretch of that I had a 9am standing meeting three blocks off Grand Central. I learned, the hard way, that a great bagel can absolutely cost you your meeting if you pick the wrong counter at 8:45 on a Tuesday.
So this is not a ranking of the best-tasting bagels in Midtown. Well, it is, but it is also something more useful. I ranked these by how fast the line actually moves at peak rush, because in Midtown that is the number that matters. A transcendent everything bagel does you no good if you are still stuck behind fourteen people ordering catering platters when your boss walks into the conference room.
