Finding great dim sum in New York City is not actually hard. Finding great dim sum without accidentally ending up at a place that’s coasting on its reputation from 2009? That takes a little more work.

I’ve spent an embarrassing number of weekend mornings eating my way through Chinatown and Flushing, and I have strong opinions about where to go. Some of these picks are famous. Some are the ones I’d only tell a friend about. All of them will make you very, very full for under $40.

  1. Dim Sum Go GoRestaurant · ChinatownThe snow pea leaf dumplings are something you won’t find at traditional spots, and they’re genuinely great.
  2. Jing FongRestaurant · ChinatownThe siu mai and har gow are still excellent.
  3. New World Mall food courtMarket · FlushingIt’s the best cheap eating (/nyc-on-a-budget/) in all five boroughs.
  4. Nom Wah Tea ParlorRestaurant · ChinatownOrder the OG egg roll. It’s the original recipe and it’s crispy and porky and perfect.
  5. Oriental GardenRestaurant · ChinatownThe seafood here is noticeably fresher than most dim sum spots.
