The best places to eat before a Broadway matinee.

Every one from my own visits, updated September 2026. 8 places.

My husband and I have a rule about Broadway matinees. We eat first, we eat close, and we are in our seats before the ushers give us that look. I learned that one the hard way. The first matinee we ever did together, we booked a sweet little lunch fourteen blocks south, dawdled over a second coffee, and speed-walked into the St. James at 1:58 for a 2 p.m. curtain. Sweaty. Out of breath. Climbing over six pairs of knees while the overture played. Amateur.

So here is the thing nobody tells you about matinee dining. It is a completely different animal from dinner before an evening show. A 2 p.m. Wednesday or Saturday curtain means the house opens at 1:30, and you want to be in your seat by 1:30 or 1:45 at the latest, because Broadway locks latecomers out until a break in the show. Which means your lunch needs to end by around 1:15. Not start. End. And that changes everything about where you go.

  1. John's Pizzeria of Times SquareRestaurant · Theater DistrictIt is the most photogenic pizza dinner in the district, and the price is gentle for how central it is.
  2. BeccoRestaurant · Theater DistrictIf I could only send you to one place before a matinee, it is Becco.
  3. Chez JosephineRestaurant · Theater DistrictI will be honest with you. This is the splurge on the list and it is more scene than speed, so it is not the pick if you are cutting it close.
  4. Joe AllenRestaurant · Theater DistrictJoe Allen has been the actual Broadway clubhouse since 1965, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays it opens at 11:30, which puts it squarely in matinee range.
  5. Junior'sRestaurant · Theater DistrictThe cheesecake is the reason to come.
  6. Los Tacos No. 1Restaurant · Theater DistrictYou stand, you order the adobada or the nopal, you eat the best three tacos in the neighborhood off a little ledge, and you are back on the sidewalk in fifteen minutes with change in your pocket.
  7. MarseilleRestaurant · Hell's KitchenBut if you want your matinee lunch to feel like part of the day out rather than a pit stop, this is the one.
  8. OotoyaRestaurant · MidtownIt is the longest walk on this list at roughly eight minutes to the theaters, but 41st is calmer than the blocks up north, so the stroll is pleasant rather than a scrum.
