The best places to eat before a Broadway matinee.

My husband and I have a rule about Broadway matinees. We eat first, we eat close, and we are in our seats before the ushers give us that look. I learned that one the hard way. The first matinee we ever did together, we booked a sweet little lunch fourteen blocks south, dawdled over a second coffee, and speed-walked into the St. James at 1:58 for a 2 p.m. curtain. Sweaty. Out of breath. Climbing over six pairs of knees while the overture played. Amateur.

So here is the thing nobody tells you about matinee dining. It is a completely different animal from dinner before an evening show. A 2 p.m. Wednesday or Saturday curtain means the house opens at 1:30, and you want to be in your seat by 1:30 or 1:45 at the latest, because Broadway locks latecomers out until a break in the show. Which means your lunch needs to end by around 1:15. Not start. End. And that changes everything about where you go.
