The Upper West Side is a relaxed residential neighborhood stretching from Central Park to the Hudson River. It has a strong community feel, classic pre-war buildings, and leafy streets perfect for strolling. There are plenty of cultural institutions around, like the American Museum of Natural History and Lincoln Center, but the neighborhood feels removed from the fast pace of NYC (that’s the biggest reason we chose to move here!).
It’s one of the best neighborhoods to stay in New York City for families, with easy access to both Central Park and Riverside Park, each packed with playgrounds, paths, and open space for kids to roam. The vibe is calm and friendly, and you’ll find plenty of kid-friendly restaurants, bakeries, and bookstores. The 1/2/3 and B/C trains make getting around the city simple even with a stroller in tow.
Why it works: Quiet, residential, and loaded with parks, playgrounds, and kid-friendly museums, the Upper West Side is a long-time favorite for families . I might be biased because I live here, but it’s one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city, which is why I recommend it to my own friends when they ask about where to stay in NYC with kids.

LIC is a fantastic base for families thanks to spacious accommodations, quieter vibe, and kid-friendly attractions like Gantry Plaza State Park with its playgrounds and riverfront paths. The easy access to Manhattan makes sightseeing a breeze, but you still get a break from the crowds at the end of the day. Plus, many hotels here were built recently, often with modern amenities and more space than you’d typically find in central Manhattan.
Why it works: LIC has quickly become one of NYC’s best-kept family travel secrets. It offers beautiful waterfront parks, skyline views, and modern hotels—often at a fraction of Manhattan prices. This is one of the best New York City neighborhoods to stay with kids for families on a budget.
