Broadway shows have the ability to spark a child’s imagination unlike anything else, which is why I’m a big believer in budgeting a show while visiting New York City with kids. Thankfully there’s no shortage of family-friendly Broadway shows to choose from, let’s dive in!

Tips for Seeing Broadway Shows with Kids
Find age-appropriate shows: If you’re looking for the best Broadway shows for young kinds, I suggest opting for musicals with familiar themes and catchy songs. Chances are most people in the audience will have kids within a similar age range, which means it’ll be totally fine if your kid accidentally talks during a scene (they won’t be the only culprits!).
Prepare your kiddos beforehand: It’s always helpful to explain theater etiquette (no talking, standing up, etc.) before the show starts. While doing so, take some time to also discuss the plot and themes of the show to help your kiddo better grasp the story line. If you’re watching a Broadway show with kids who are easily startled, explain any scenes that might scare them or catch them off guard beforehand.
Take note of the show’s minimum age: Most Broadway theaters don’t allow admission for anyone under four years old. Likewise, just because your kid meets the “recommended age” for a show doesn’t mean the show is suitable for them. You know your kids best, so choose shows that will entertain and cater to their interests.
Request a (free) booster seat: Game changer, especially for younger kids. Ask for one upon arrival even if you’re not sure you’ll need it. Most boosters fit under the seats, so if your child doesn’t need it you can easily set it aside.
The Lion King
The Plot: An adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, Lion King follows Simba, a young lion cub destined to be king. After the death of his father, Simba grapples with his destiny and struggles to rediscovers his purpose. Exiled and consumed by guilt, Simba befriends Timon and Pumbaa and sets out to reclaim the throne while learning about resilience along the way.
My Take: Blending breathtaking puppetry, vibrant costumes, and powerful music by Elton John and Tim Rice, the entire performance is visually stunning. With captivating storytelling and awe-inspiring stagecraft, Lion King is one of the most entertaining family-friendly Broadway shows in New York City.

NYC Broadway Shows for Young Kids: Aladdin
The Plot: Another beloved classic, follow along as Aladdin discovers a magic lamp containing a wish-granting Genie. With the Genie’s help, Aladdin transforms into a prince in an effort to win the love of Princess Jasmine and defeat the villainous Jafar.
My Take: Although Aladdin is recommended for ages 6+, I watched the show with my best friend’s 5-year-old daughter and she was at the edge of her seat the entire time. The magic carpet scene is mind-blowing (the teenage girls sitting behind us audibly gasped). This is one of the best kid-friendly Broadway shows in NYC, it’s very entertaining.

Best Show for Teens Who “Aren’t Interested” in Broadway: Hamilton
The Plot: Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an ambitious immigrant who rises from poverty to become one of our country’s Founding Fathers. Through his brilliance and determination, he shapes the nation’s financial system, but his relentless drive strains relationships with friends, family, and political rivals. Ultimately, his life is marked by both triumphs and tragedies, leaving a legacy that echoes through history.
My Take: Hamilton is the reason I fell in love with Broadway. The music, the story, the humor! It’s a perfect combination for anyone interesting in dipping their toes in the theater pool, I can’t recommend it enough!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
The Plot: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part play set nineteen years after the events of the Harry Potter series. It follows Harry Potter’s son, Albus Severus, who struggles with his family legacy. Along the way, he befriends Scorpius Malfoy and together they embark on a journey through time to correct past mistakes. The play explores themes of friendship, family, and the consequences of choices.
My Take: This Broadway show is a must-see for families who love Harry Potter, but even those new to the wizarding world can enjoy the play. While the plot leaves much to the desired, the stunning effects and incredible set design make it an unforgettable experience for all.

Best Broadway Show for Tweens: & Juliet
The Plot: & Juliet re-imagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet with a twist: Juliet finds life post-Romeo less of a drag than expected. Taking charge of her fate, she sets out on a journey of self-discovery, traveling to Paris with friends instead of wallowing in misery.
My Take: & Juliet is a fresh take on a tired classic (because a girl’s life doesn’t end when her relationship does). It’s a great Broadway show for teens and tweens because of the cheeky humor. The story probably won’t resonate with young kids though.

Thought-Provoking Musical for Kids: Wicked

Ultimately, the show explores themes of acceptance, identity, and how history is shaped by perspective.
My Take: Wicked has been one of the most popular Broadway shows in NYC for years, amassing over $2 billion in sales since 2003. The musical presents a unique take on well-known characters and themes, appealing to tweens, teens, and adults alike.

Little Shop of Horrors

However, as Audrey II grows and demands more blood, Seymour grapples with a moral dilemma between his desires and the plant’s insatiable appetite.
My Take: Similar to time-tested classics like Frankenstein or Dracula, some squeamish children could find the show unsettling while many will enjoy the thrill of watching “taboo” content. The fake plant and lighthearted musical numbers maintain an air of fantasy. Just note (spoiler) that the plant does eat one person. Those on the fence can always watch the 1986 movie version to gauge the plot and appropriateness.
