Tips for Visiting NYC in February
- Be sure to read: What to Pack for New York in Winter (+Outfit Ideas) for helpful suggestions.
- Bring winter shoes: It’s no secret that February in New York City is cold, so read up on the best shoes for walking around NYC (for every season). I recommend insulated/waterproof boots (here’s the pair I live in).
- Portable charger: Cold weather depletes batteries (cellphones and cameras) quicker than you’d expect so pick up one of these bad boys before heading out to NYC.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year
- Date: February 16, 2025 at 1pm

- Check out the official website here
Some folks don’t realize that Manhattan is home to the largest Chinatown in the country. Home to more than 150,000 Chinese-Americans, celebrating the Lunar New Year in Chinatown is not something you’ll quickly forget!
Dragon dancing, colorful outfits, martial art performers and impressive dancers take to the street for live music and firecrackers.
Featuring stunning visuals and delicious treats, there’s two important dates to know: The main parade takes place February 16, 2025 and the Firecracker Ceremony and Cultural Festival take place January 29, 2025 at Sara D. Roosevelt Park.

Enjoy Hot Toddies at Bar Pisellino
Arguably the most authentic espresso bar you’ll find this side of the Atlantic, Bar Pisellino is a must-visit for those in search of cozy activities in New York City in Febraury. A personal favorite, my husband and I are frequent fliers at this cozy joint, we love their hot toddies and hot chocolate (think thick European sipping chocolate).
Longtime readers know Bar Pisellino is a staple in my West Village arsenal, can’t recommend it enough!

Crash Bumper Cars at Bryant Park
- Dates: Until March 1, 2025
- Cost: $25 for 10 minutes
- For more information, check out the official website
Riding bumper cars in Bryant Park is one of the most nostalgic activities while visiting New York City in February. The park’s beloved ice rink transforms into a thrilling bumper car track, giving you a chance to crash into friends and strangers alike.
This is a lighthearted and quirky addition to any New York City February itinerary! Everyone in the group is bound to have a great time (children must be 7 and older to ride).
Local’s Advice: This is one of the most popular things to do in NYC in February, so make reservations in advance!

Attend The Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden
Dates: February 15–April 27, 2025
Where to buy tickets: New York Botanical Garden
A kaleidoscopic display of colors, the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden is one of the most popular things to see in NYC in February. Running for more than 20 years, the garden teams up with local designers every year to showcase rare orchids from around the world.
Watch as these masterful artists transform the conservatory into a green thumb’s fever dream, centered around a theme (the theme in 2025 is Mexican Modernism). You can enjoy the exhibit and attend workshops and lectures to learn more about orchid care and conservation, I’d consider this a can’t-miss activity for anyone that loves plants.

Celebrate National Pizza Day!
Date: February 9, 2025
New York City is a pizza destination year round, so celebrating National Pizza Day while visiting New York City in February is a no brainer. Hop between iconic pizzerias for classic New York-style slices and gourmet pies. President’s Day originated as a means to honor the birthday of George Washington, the first president of the United States. New York City is a perfect place to celebrate the holiday because it served as the nation’s first capital, so it’s full of interesting historic places to explore
Check out Federal Hall (where Washington was sworn in as president) and Trinity Church (where Alexander Hamilton is buried). Afterwards, swing by Fraunces Tavern (where George Washington bid an emotional farewell to his officers) for a beer. You’ll be walking in Washington’s very footsteps!

Celebrate Valentine’s Day in NYC
Date: February 14, 2025
Some say Paris is the most romantic city in the world and while that may be true, NYC is no stranger to a little romance. Home to world-renowned restaurants, charming jazz clubs and breathtaking observations decks, celebrating Valentines Day in NYC is a treat.

Name a Roach After Your Ex at the Bronx Zoo
Not feeling the love? Here’s Plan B: The Name a Roach program at the Bronx Zoo is a great way to get even with an ex on Valentine’s Day. For only $15 you can name a Madagascar hissing cockroach and get an official certificate from the zoo.
The fun doesn’t stop there, the zoo also offers a Roach Romance package. The unique experience covers the role insects play in the chocolate making process and ends with chocolate and wine.
Watch the Super Bowl at a Sports Bar
Date: February 9, 2025
Watching the Super Bowl at a local bar is a cool NYC February experience you won’t want to miss. Rowdy crowds, cold pints and greasy bar food, it doesn’t get better than this. Need suggestions? My favorite sports bar is Standings in the East Village.
Get Active at Winter Jam in Central Park
The lovely folks at the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation host an annual event called Winter Jam. The highlight of the event is the mini mountain of snow at Rumsey Playfield (near the Bandshell), giving kids a chance to enjoy a winter wonderland in the heart of Manhattan.
Complete with a snowfield for snowshoeing and sledding, this event is one of the best free things to do in New York City in February. Live music, food vendors, and various winter-themed entertainment, it’s the perfect way to enjoy the outdoors while visiting NYC in winter!

Amateur Night at the Apollo
Date: February 19 & 26, 2025
Amateur Night at the Apollo is best billed as a glorious talent show where musicians, comedians and dancers attempt to earn the applause of the notoriously tough crowd (booing is par for the course). You could witness the budding career of a talented artist, or join the crowd in booing. Tickets are required and available via Ticketmaster.
Attend a New York Rangers Game
If you’re visiting New York City in February you should make an effort to attend a New York Rangers game. One of the original six teams in the National Hockey League, the Rangers have a loyal and passionate fan base. Hell, sometimes the fans are more entertaining than the games.
Winter Dog Days at Governors Island

All 172 glorious acres of Governors Island are open to dogs (and people) every Saturday and Sunday in February. To get the the island, you’ll need to take a public ferry. After 3pm, dogs won’t be allowed to board the inbound ferry to Governors Island.
However, if you find yourself on the island past 3pm, fret not. Dogs are allowed on the outbound ferry until the last ferry leaves the island. The best part? The island and ferry offer stunning views of New York City!
