I have given this exact itinerary out loud so many times that I can recite it by heart. A friend flies into JFK, texts me “we only have one full day, what should we do,” and before they finish typing I am already answering. Spend it in Brooklyn. Not Manhattan, not the museum-and-observation-deck checklist everyone else hands them. Brooklyn. It is the day that turns a first-timer into someone who gets it.
My husband and I ran this loop for years, with my mom, with old college roommates, with jet-lagged visitors who swore they had nothing left in the tank and then walked eight miles without noticing. The route goes bridge to DUMBO to a promenade almost nobody plans for, then a coal-oven pizza, a loose afternoon, and a sunset over the water from the far northern tip of the borough. It is mostly on foot. You will touch the subway exactly once, at the very end. And it runs west to east on purpose, because the last stop is timed to the light.
Morning. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge the right direction
Start on the Manhattan side, near City Hall, and walk toward Brooklyn. This is not negotiable, and the reason is simple physics of a photo. Walk toward Brooklyn and the skyline sits behind you at the start, then DUMBO and the two bridges open up in front of you the whole rest of the way. Walk the other direction and you spend the crossing with your back to everything worth seeing. I have watched people do it the wrong way and come off deflated, wondering what the fuss was.
Get there early. Not vague blog “beat the crowds” early. I mean genuinely before 9am if you can manage it, because by mid-morning in summer the walkway becomes a slow-moving river of selfie sticks and confused cyclists. The walk runs about a mile and takes most people 30 to 40 minutes with photo stops. Those Gothic stone towers up close are honestly stunning, and the wood-plank walkway has a slight give underfoot that reminds you that you are suspended over a working river. Just go early and stay out of the bike lane.
DUMBO. The photo, the carousel, the cobblestones
Come off the bridge and you land more or less right in DUMBO. If you have never learned what the name actually stands for, it is worth two minutes and a small delight. I wrote the whole silly, wonderful story of it in my piece on what DUMBO actually means. First order of business here is caffeine and the shot. The famous one lives on Washington Street between Front and Water, where you stand in the middle of the cobblestones and the Manhattan Bridge frames itself perfectly between two red-brick warehouses. Everyone has seen this photo. Almost nobody realizes it is taken from a normal street corner you can just walk to.
From there it is a two-minute stroll down to Brooklyn Bridge Park and Jane’s Carousel, an antique carousel that sits inside a glass box right on the water beneath the bridge. Rides are $4, it closes for a midweek day or two, and even if you skip the ride the glowing glass pavilion against the skyline is one of the prettiest things in the borough. The park itself unrolls along the river with lawns and a small beach and the best free skyline view most tourists never think to stand in front of.
The stop nobody plans. Brooklyn Heights Promenade
This is the part of the loop visitors never think to include, and it is the part they thank me for afterward. From Brooklyn Bridge Park you climb up into Brooklyn Heights, one of the prettiest and quietest neighborhoods in the city, all leafy blocks and 19th-century brownstones with the kind of front stoops people set entire novels on. Thread through it to the Promenade, a raised walkway cantilevered over the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that most guidebooks forget exists.
What you get from that railing is a wide-open, unobstructed sweep of Lower Manhattan, the harbor, and the Statue of Liberty out in the haze, completely free and open around the clock. No ticket, no line, no gift shop funneling you out through the merch. After a morning of crowds it is a real exhale. I like to sit on a bench here for ten minutes and let the day slow down before lunch, because the pizza is next and you want to arrive hungry.
Lunch. Juliana’s, and yes I am choosing for you
Now we eat, and I am making the decision for you, because you asked for the itinerary and the itinerary has a pizza in it. Go to Juliana’s, at 19 Old Fulton Street, right at the foot of the bridge. Here is where tourists get tangled. There are two famous coal-oven pizzerias sitting side by side under the bridge. Grimaldi’s, which usually has the longer line, and Juliana’s, which is the one run by Patsy Grimaldi himself, the man who started the original. Same block, and one of them is quietly the better pie. Order the Margherita. The char on the crust, the way the coal oven blisters it, that is the whole reason to walk down here.
Two honest cautions. The wait can be real at peak lunch, so come off the promenade around 11:30 rather than 1pm and you will walk right in. And this is a whole-pie place in spirit, not a grab-a-slice window, so bring at least one other appetite and sit down for it properly. If pizza is genuinely the thing you flew here for, know that I have argued the wider case for where to find New York’s best slices elsewhere on the site, but for this specific day, on this specific block, Juliana’s is the answer.
Afternoon. Keep it loose on purpose
After lunch is the deliberately unstructured stretch, because everyone’s stamina is different by early afternoon and a good itinerary leaves room for that. If your people are still going strong, this is a great window to wander back through the DUMBO cobblestones you rushed past in the morning, poke into the bookshop and the design stores, or walk the waterfront a little farther. If they are fading, a slow coffee and a bench works just as well. The point of this whole day is that it never once feels like a march.
What I would not do is try to bolt Coney Island or a full loop of Prospect Park onto this. It is too much, you will end up rushing, and rushing is the one thing this itinerary is designed to avoid. Save those for a second Brooklyn day. Whatever you choose, aim to be drifting north toward Greenpoint by late afternoon, because the last stop is timed to the sun and you do not want to miss it.
Evening. Greenpoint, and a sunset over Manhattan
Greenpoint is a historically Polish neighborhood at the far northern edge of Brooklyn, and it is my favorite corner of North Brooklyn by a wide margin. Williamsburg next door gets the headlines and the crowds. Greenpoint gets my Sunday mornings. I make the full case for it, and for why I pick it over its flashier neighbor, in my Greenpoint guide. For today, walk the length of Manhattan Avenue, the low-rise main drag, past the old Polish bakeries and Peter Pan Donut and Pastry Shop, a genuine 1950s counter where the powdered-cream doughnut is worth the detour.
Then point yourself at the water for the finish. This is the reason the whole day runs west to east. You want to be standing at WNYC Transmitter Park, a small waterfront park with a pier that reaches out into the East River, when the sun drops behind Manhattan. The skyline goes copper, then pink, then a deep blue that switches the office lights on one tower at a time, and you are looking straight across at the whole of Midtown from a quiet pier most tourists will never find. Bring something cold. Sit on the pier. This is the shot you will still have on your phone a year later.
Before or after the sunset, feed yourself properly. For the full old-world Greenpoint experience, Karczma at 136 Greenpoint Avenue is a wood-beamed Polish tavern doing pierogi, kielbasa, and potato pancakes at prices that feel like a different decade. It is the kind of hearty, unfussy meal that lands right after a long day on your feet, and it sends you home full.
The one subway leg, and how the day flows
The whole thing is more walkable than it looks on a map, but you will use the subway once, at the end, to get from DUMBO up to Greenpoint. The G train is your friend for that hop, and it is the one line that never touches Manhattan, which somehow feels fitting for a day spent entirely on the good side of the river. Tap in with a contactless card or your phone. Everything else is on foot, at your own pace, with the light doing the scheduling for you.
