Completed in 1872, Belvedere Castle sits atop a large rock outcropping known as Vista Rock (the second-highest point in the park). Renovated in 2019, the castle gets its name from the Italian word for “beautiful view.” Aptly named, the terrace offers unparalleled views of the park. Which is why I consider Belvedere Castle a must-see in Central Park.
The moment you walk in, you’ll notice the weight of history as soon as you step inside Enjoy the Panoramic Views at Belvedere Castle. Thisn’t the kind of attraction you breeze through in twenty minutes, there’s real depth here, the kind that rewards slow looking and genuine curiosity. I’d recommend reading a bit about the background before you visit; it transforms a nice outing into something genuinely moving. The architecture alone is worth the trip, but it’s the smaller details, the craftsmanship, the unexpected corners, that stay with you longest. Try to visit during off-peak hours if you can.

Sitting high atop a hill on a large rock outcrop known as Vista Rock (the second highest point in Central Park, in fact), is Belvedere Castle. The castle’s terraces offer sweeping views of New York City’s iconic skyline. Belvedere is Italian for “beautiful view” and it lives up to the name.
The castle was completed in 1872 and designed specifically to offer views of the surrounding landscape. It was renovated in 1983 and then again 2019 to modernize the terraces and building. Visitors are welcome to explore the castle for great views, but I especially enjoy seeing it from the great lawn, especially during fall. You’ll see tons of picnickers on the lawn and might even stumble upon a yoga session, like I did.
Part lookout, part fairytale backdrop, Belvedere Castle is perched on a hill with some of the best views in the park. Climb to the top, peek through the turrets, and look out over Turtle Pond, yes, there are real turtles! It’s small but special, especially if your kid is in their “castle and dragon” phase.
The terrace on top of Belvedere Castle gives you a surprisingly great elevated view of Central Park’s north end.
