I remember the first time I went to Brooklyn Bridge Park and thought okay, this is it. This is the most beautiful spot in New York. I was standing on Pier 1 looking back at the Manhattan skyline at sunset and the whole city was turning golden and I genuinely felt emotional about it. I had been living here for maybe six months at that point and it was the first time the city made me tear up a little.
The park stretches 1.3 miles along the Brooklyn waterfront and every section has a different personality. Pier 1 is the manicured section with rolling hills and the best skyline views. Pier 2 has the sports courts and roller skating rink. Pier 4 has the small beach (yes, there is a beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park). And Pier 6 has the playground and the ferry landing.
My favorite thing to do here is come around 6 PM on a summer evening, grab food from Time Out Market in DUMBO (which is a two-minute walk away), and eat it on the grass at Pier 1 while watching the sunset paint the Manhattan skyline. It sounds like I’m being dramatic but I promise you it is genuinely one of the most beautiful things you can do in New York for free.
The Jane’s Carousel inside the park is also magical. It’s a restored 1922 carousel inside a glass pavilion designed by Jean Nouvel and at night it glows like a lantern. It costs $2 to ride and it is worth it even as an adult with no children present. I have done this. I am not embarrassed.
For a dramatic backdrop and true NYC energy, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a classic place to watch the 4th of July fireworks in NYC. I’ve watched from here a few times over the years, and it never disappoints. The East River views are wide open, the bridge looms above you, and the crowd always feels celebratory in the best way.
There are several good sections within the park, Pebble Beach, Main Street Lawn, and Pier 1 are all excellent. I usually bring a blanket and grab something from Time Out Market or one of the nearby food trucks before finding a spot. It gets crowded early, so if you want a good view, plan to arrive well before sunset.
One tip. Bring a portable battery and some bug spray. Once the fireworks start, it’s easy to get swept up in the moment, but the hours leading up can be long without a little preparation.
If you’re visiting NYC in July, this one of the most scenic and electric places to be. The photo ops alone are worth the trip.
Since 2000, Brooklyn Bridge Park has been a local hot-spot for enjoying outdoor movies in New York City. The epic Manhattan skyline looms behind the movie screen, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget. Family-friend movies take place every Thursday from July through August at Pier 1 Harbor View Lawn.
This event is great for the whole family because PG-13 and R rated selections are clearly noted in advance. In terms of food, feel free to bring your own, if not, there’s a slew of Time Out Market vendors dolling out drinks and food.
Food and music starts at 5pm (on the Pier 1 Promenade) and the lawn opens at 6:00pm. Movies typically begin at sundown (generally around 8pm). I suggest arriving around 4:30pm to give yourself ample time to pass through bag check, grab a bite and stake out a good spot.
