There’s nothing like the 4th of July fireworks in NYC. Whether you’re a local or visiting for the holiday weekend, the Macy’s Fireworks Show over the East River is one of the most iconic summer experiences in the city. I’ve watched it from rooftops, waterfront parks, and even the FDR Drive—and every year it still gives me chills.
In 2024, the fireworks are expected to launch from barges along the East River again, offering great views from Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. The trick is knowing where to go early and what to bring. Over the years, I’ve learned which spots get packed, which ones feel more local, and how to enjoy the show without the chaos.
This guide breaks down the best places to watch the 4th of July fireworks in NYC, based on firsthand experience—from waterfront parks to less crowded alternatives. Whether you’re looking for a front-row view, a family-friendly area, or a more low-key scene, I’ve got you covered.
Here’s where I’d go this year—and exactly why.

Macy’s Fireworks Show (Good to Know)
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks is an annual Independence Day fireworks display held in New York City. You’ll find the fireworks show, usually held over the East River or Hudson River, has been sponsored by Macy’s, Inc. each year since 1976. Here, the event has been televised as a special since 1983 (currently billed as the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular), originally airing on WPIX, and being syndicated nationally beginning in 1991. In 2000, the special moved to NBC, where it has been broadcast ever since.
In 2024, the fireworks display returned to the Hudson River, launching from five barges positioned between West 14th and West 34th Streets in Manhattan. The show began at 9:25 p.m. and lasted approximately 25 minutes. It featured over 60,000 shells in more than 30 colors, reaching heights of up to 1,000 feet. The event included performances by artists such as Amber Mark, Brandy Clark, Lainey Wilson, Luis Fonsi, Mickey Guyton, and The War and Treaty.
For those unable to attend in person, the fireworks were broadcast live on NBC and streamed on Peacock, allowing viewers nationwide to enjoy the spectacle.
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display continues to be a highlight of New York City’s summer celebrations, drawing large crowds and offering a memorable experience for all who attend.
Where to Watch Fireworks in NYC

Gantry Plaza State Park (Long Island City, Queens)
Every year, I try to catch the 4th of July fireworks in NYC from a new vantage point—but Gantry Plaza State Park remains one of my favorites. Set right on the East River in Long Island City, it offers sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and a clear shot of the fireworks if the barges are positioned nearby (which they usually are).
I love this spot because it feels spacious without being overwhelming. There’s a mix of open lawn, benches, and boardwalk seating, plus clean restrooms and food vendors nearby. Families set up blankets hours in advance, and by nightfall, the whole park buzzes with quiet excitement. It’s festive but not chaotic.
If you’re visiting NYC for the 4th of July and want a laid-back, scenic experience, Gantry Plaza is a smart pick. The 7 train makes it easy to access, and the views are hard to beat. Just get there early—I usually arrive around 5 PM with snacks, water, and a light jacket.
Bonus. you’ll have front-row seats to the skyline lighting up behind the fireworks.
Brooklyn Bridge Park (DUMBO + Brooklyn Heights)
For a dramatic backdrop and true NYC energy, Brooklyn Bridge Park is a classic place to watch the 4th of July fireworks in NYC. I’ve watched from here a few times over the years, and it never disappoints. The East River views are wide open, the bridge looms above you, and the crowd always feels celebratory in the best way.
There are several good sections within the park—Pebble Beach, Main Street Lawn, and Pier 1 are all excellent. I usually bring a blanket and grab something from Time Out Market or one of the nearby food trucks before finding a spot. It gets crowded early, so if you want a good view, plan to arrive well before sunset.
One tip. bring a portable battery and some bug spray. Once the fireworks start, it’s easy to get swept up in the moment—but the hours leading up can be long without a little preparation.
If you’re visiting NYC in July, this one of the most scenic and electric places to be. The photo ops alone are worth the trip.
FDR Drive Public Viewing (Manhattan)
One of the most official and direct ways to watch the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks in NYC is from the FDR Drive, which opens select sections for public viewing every year. I’ve done this a couple of times, and while it’s definitely more structured (security checkpoints, designated entry times), it puts you closer to the action than almost anywhere else.
Pro tip. most people rush through here. Take your time. It’s worth it.
The sections vary slightly from year to year, but they’re usually between 23rd and 42nd Streets on the East Side. If you’re staying in Manhattan and want to walk to the show, this the easiest bet.
It’s less scenic than the parks and a bit more crowded, but the views are direct, and the fireworks feel massive from this vantage point. The street is closed to traffic, and there’s something surreal about watching a fireworks show from the middle of a highway.
If you’re visiting NYC on the 4th of July and want a straightforward, high-impact experience, FDR Drive is it. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and be prepared to queue—but it’s worth it.
Local tip. Between you and me, the seasonal menu is always better than the regular one. Ask what’s fresh today.
