Origin The Cronut, a hybrid pastry made up of half-croissant and half-doughnut was created by the incredible pastry chef Dominique Ansel. Since opening its doors in 2013, Dominque Ansel has released a new Cronut flavor every month, never repeating the same flavor. That’s over 130 different and unique flavors of this famous NYC food! The innovative treat quickly gained worldwide fame, inspiring bakeries globally to replicate its success.

The Cronut sells out daily, but fret not, this NYC bakery’s innovative approach to pastries, combining traditional French techniques with imaginative concepts, ensures that every baked good is bound to impress. Another famous food in New York City that can be had at this bakery is the Kouign-Amann (pronounced “Queen Amon”). It’s perfectly flakey and caramelized in sugar.

Where to eat it Dominique Ansel Bakery in SoHo is where this iconic NYC treat was created. Others have since tried to recreate it, but no one does it quite like the original.

Serving New Yorkers for more than 100 years, Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs has been a Coney Island staple since 1916. There’s a few outposts on Coney Island (and NYC) but visiting the flagship at Surf & Stillwell Avenues is one of the best things to do in Coney Island.

You’ll find a variety of classic hot dogs on offer, alongside burgers, fries and frozen custards. Over the course of a century, Nathan’s Famous has become a nationwide brand, largely thanks to the uber-famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, held in Coney Island every year.

Arguably one of the most famous New York City hotdog brands, Nathan’s Famous was founded on Coney Island in 1916. Over the last century, the company has managed to pepper carts all across the city. They have solid footing in many of the popular tourist areas so odds are you’ll be able to give them a try.

Since it’s a hotdog-specific company there are many iterations and toppings to choose from. At the end of the day though, they’re not gourmet, just quick and appetizing.

If you visit New York City in July you can even go out to see Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on the Fourth of July. Sponsored by Nathan’s since the 1970s, folks stuff their faces with some of the best hot dogs in NYC in the name of competitive eating and glory.
