The New York Earth Room.

Walter De Maria filled a 3,600-square-foot SoHo loft with 280,000 pounds of dirt in 1977. It’s still there. The New York Earth Room (141 Wooster Street, 2nd floor) is free, open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 6pm (closed 3-3:30pm), and it’s one of the most unexpectedly moving art experiences in the city.

You walk up a narrow staircase, turn the corner, and there’s just… dirt. An entire apartment’s worth of dirt, 22 inches deep. The smell of earth in the middle of SoHo is disorienting in the best way. You stand there for a minute trying to figure out how you feel about it.

It takes five minutes to visit. It’s free. It’s been maintained by the same person for decades. And it might be my favorite piece of art in New York.

Intrigued, he popped inside and said he found himself emotional by the silence and pleasant earthy smells.
