Ovenly is an award-winning bakery in Brooklyn that focuses on a small, put together cake menu (offering 5 varieties at a time) rather than offering dozens of flavors. Focusing on quality over quantity, these cakes are exciting and memorable.

As much as I love the seasonal offerings (currently a vanilla cake with lemon curd and lavender buttercream), I’m a huge fan of the cake that put this bakery on the map, the iconic Brooklyn Blackout cake.

This rich chocolate cake is filled with chocolate pudding and topped with chocolate cake crumbs. Unlike traditional chocolate cakes, Ovenly’s version. It’s the perfect birthday cake for those that LOVE chocolate on chocolate, highly recommend!

My advice If you’re Looking for the best most unique birthday cakes in NYC, I recommend the Pistachio Cardamon Cake with Honey Buttercream (made with gluten free ingredients), which tastes as good as it sounds.

Ovenly in Greenpoint and Cobble Hill does this intensely dark, almost bittersweet Brooklyn Blackout Cake that absolutely floored me the first time I tried it. Three layers of devil’s food cake with chocolate pudding in between, covered in chocolate cake crumbs. It’s not for the faint of heart and that’s exactly why I love it.

Ask any New Yorker their favorite place for chocolate cake in New York City, and the honest ones will mention Ovenly without hesitation. Ovenly’s version of the iconic Brooklyn Blackout has been attracting folks from all corners of New York State for years now.

Defined by an impossibly deep black color, this cake is no joke. In fact, if you have a friend who constantly complains about the lack of chocolate flavor in a chocolate cake while simultaneously taking shots of chocolate syrup from the fridge, this cake will stop them in their tracks.
