This is a proper Irish pub that has been around since 1969, and the reason it makes my list is simple, the deal is generous and the room is unfussy. Their own red ale runs cheap and the pours are honest. There is a sister location on West 36th in the Fashion District if you are down that way.
My honest take, this is not a fancy night out, it is a reliable after-work pint with good fries. Sometimes that is exactly the assignment. Note the old Third Avenue location closed, so head to 48th Street.
