Union Square Park.

Union Square Park was originally designed as a town square in 1839. The pedestrian plaza and park serves as a safe haven for street artists, professionals on lunch breaks, busy students, and eager tourists. To that end, if you’re in the East Village and looking for things to do, consider swinging by and spending a few hours people-watching.

There are plenty of cafes and affordable restaurants nearby, but whenever I take out-of-town visitors, I always suggest grabbing food from the nearby Whole Foods. It’s quick and easy and you can easily enjoy the meal on a park bench.

One of my favorite things about Union Square Park is the lively year-round farmer’s market. You’ll find everything from local honey to fresh baked bread and original artwork.

The park is also home to Union Square Market, a year-round destination offering fresh produce, artisanal foods, handmade crafts, and unique goods from local farmers and vendors. Visitors can browse vibrant stalls showcasing seasonal fruits, vegetables, flowers, and more. The market also features special events, live performances, and educational programs, creating a dynamic atmosphere.

Grab a meal to go and enjoy it on a park bench. But fair warning, on any given sunny day, you can expect every bench at this beloved New York City park to be full.

Also worth noting, similar to Washington Square Park, if there’s something big going on in the news, expect it to be represented at Union Square Park viacelebration, protest, or anything in between.

Amidst its vibrant atmosphere, a true gem is the stunning fall foliage. Kwanzan cherry trees form a beautiful colorful canopy, providing breathtaking views. For a quieter experience, visit on weekdays, especially in the morning, as weekends can get busy.
