- Tudor City BridgeLandmark · MidtownIt’s free, it’s always empty, and at sunset, the light on the Chrysler Building from this angle is the kind of thing that makes you stop and stare.
- The Roosevelt Island TramwayLandmark · Roosevelt IslandFor $2.90, you get a view that rivals any observation deck.
- The CloistersMuseum · Upper ManhattanIt feels like you’ve been teleported to southern France.
- Green-Wood CemeteryPark · Brooklyn478 acres of rolling hills, ponds, Gothic architecture, and enormous old trees.
- The Abandoned City Hall Subway StationLandmark · Lower ManhattanIt’s one of the coolest things you can do in New York without leaving the subway.
- Merchant’s House MuseumMuseum · East VillageIt’s also allegedly one of the most haunted buildings in New York, if you’re into that.
- The Whispering Gallery at Grand CentralLandmark · MidtownIt’s the kind of thing that makes Grand Central feel magical instead of just commuter-functional.
- The Elevated AcrePark · Financial DistrictI used to eat lunch here when I worked in FiDi and I’d have the whole place to myself.
- Wave HillPark · BronxIt’s one of the most beautiful places in New York City and almost nobody visits because it’s in the Bronx.
- Little IslandPark · Hudson River ParkGo before 10am on a Tuesday and you might have entire sections to yourself.
- 6 1/2 Avenue Pedestrian CorridorStreet · MidtownBut on a freezing January day or a sweltering August afternoon, it’s the most practical secret in Manhattan.
- Red Hook WaterfrontLandmark · Red HookThe waterfront views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor are extraordinary, and on a quiet afternoon, you’ll have them mostly to yourself.
- The Panorama of the City of New York at the Queens MuseumMuseum · Flushing Meadows, QueensStanding over it feels like being a giant looking down at the city.
- Fort Tilden BeachPark · Rockaway Peninsula, QueensBut on a hot summer day, this is the best beach in New York City by a wide margin.
