My spring bucket list.

I start getting antsy around mid-February. The days are getting slightly longer, there’s the occasional random 50-degree day that tricks you into thinking winter is over (it is not), and I start making lists. Actual lists. In my Notes app. Of all the things I want to do the second spring arrives in New York City.

Because here’s the thing about spring in NYC. It’s short. You get maybe eight good weeks between “it’s still cold and gray” and “okay now it’s summer and humid.” Those eight weeks are absolutely packed with things reopening, events starting up, outdoor spaces coming alive, and the entire city collectively emerging from hibernation like bears who suddenly have access to rosé.

  1. Brooklyn Botanic GardenPark · Brooklyn (Prospect Heights)If you’re only going to one spot, go to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden during the peak bloom.
  2. SmorgasburgMarket · Williamsburg, Prospect ParkIt usually reopens in April and it is one of my favorite things about warm weather in New York.
  3. WestlightBar · WilliamsburgWestlight in Williamsburg has panoramic views that will make your jaw drop.
  4. Harriet's RooftopBar · Brooklyn HeightsHarriet’s Rooftop at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge is gorgeous and slightly less crowded than the Manhattan rooftops.
  5. Mr. PurpleBar · Lower East SideMr. Purple on the Lower East Side is fun and lively and has a great happy hour.
  6. 230 FifthBar · Midtown230 Fifth has an enormous outdoor terrace with direct Empire State Building views.
  7. Sheep MeadowPark · Central ParkSheep Meadow is the classic and it is genuinely magical on a spring day.
  8. Great LawnPark · Central ParkThe Great Lawn is bigger and slightly less packed.
  9. North MeadowPark · Central ParkThe North Meadow up around 97th Street is the quiet option where you can actually spread out without being next to strangers.
  10. Zabar'sMarket · Upper West SideTheir smoked salmon and cream cheese situation is unmatched.
  11. Governors IslandLandmark · Governors IslandIt is one of the best things about living in New York and most tourists don’t even know it exists.
  12. Brooklyn FleaMarket · DUMBOThe vendors are curated and everything feels like it was selected by someone with good taste.
  13. The High LinePark · Chelsea/Meatpacking DistrictThe High Line is beautiful year-round but it is at its absolute peak in spring.

  22. Manhattan BridgeLandmark · DUMBO/ChinatownMy recommendation is to walk the Manhattan Bridge from DUMBO to Chinatown (or the reverse).
  23. Williamsburg BridgeLandmark · Lower East Side/WilliamsburgThe Williamsburg Bridge is my favorite for sunsets.
