SoHo was once full of factories and warehouses, but in the present they’ve been converted into expensive condos equipped with stores at the ground level. You’ll find quite the mishmash of high-end luxury designers, unique boutiques and lively clothing stores in SoHo, NYC’s shopping district.
It goes without saying shopping in SoHo is hard to beat! But with all the options it can be hard to decide which of the stores in SoHo are worth the stop. To that end, I’ve opted to create a guide to the best SoHo shopping so you can get the most out of your visit. But I’m not one for small talk, so lets dive in!

The Sales Tax for Shopping in NYC
Before we start, it’s prudent to go over NYC’s tax situation so you’re not caught off guard during your SoHo shopping spree.
New York City shoppers are subject to three taxes:
- City sales tax of 4.5%
- State sales tax of 4%
- Commuter sales tax of 0.375%
All told, the total sales tax for shopping in New York City clocks in at 8.875%. However, clothing and footwear under $110 are exempt from city & state sales tax. Don’t let it confuse you, here’s how it works:
If you buy a shirt for $80 and a purse for $200, you will not be charged tax for the shirt (because it’s less than $110) but will be charged a sales tax of 8.875% for the purse.

Layout of SoHo
SoHo is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, the name is an abbreviation for “south of Houston Street.” The entire shopping area spans 25 blocks, and the best shopping in SoHo is done by getting lost, so allow yourself to roam from one block to the next aimlessly. But, if you need some guidance on a starting point, I suggest Broadway.

![& Other Stories, best stores in SoHo](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/nyc-1003699.jpg)
& Other Stories
Website: & Other Stories
Address: 575 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
& Other Stories has design teams in Stockholm, Paris and Los Angeles — each designing collections that are meant to reflect the fashion in that city. While staying on the cutting edge of global fashion trends, & Other Stories manages to create quality clothing that will last more than a season.
In that sense, it’s not necessarily a fast fashion brand. Rather, the aim is to create timeless pieces with a modern twist, all with the intention of helping you tell your own story through clothes. In my opinion, the dress department is where they truly shine (my most complimented dress is from this store).
Local’s Tip: Their holiday collection is especially noteworthy (those dresses!) and sells out very fast. Once an item is sold out, they seldom restock, just a heads up.
![Uniqlo, Best Stores SoHo](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/UniqloSoHo-9680-3-1.jpg)
Uniqlo
Website: Uniqlo
Address: 546 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
Quite unknown in most of the country, Uniqlo hails from Japan and is the 4th largest retailer in the world. When the store branched expanded to American, it chose NYC for its flagship US outpost. The location? None other than SoHo, of course!
In short order, Uniqlo has amassed an enthusiastic fan base around their high-quality basics. The star of the show is the Heattech gear they’ve since patented. Ask any New Yorker about their winter essentials, and this is guaranteed to come up. So much so, that we’ve included it in our winter packing list guide.
![Muji, Best SoHo Stores](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/MujiSoHo-9743-5.jpg)
Muji
Website: Muji
Address: 455 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
Following a minimalist approach to life and fashion, Muji has become a top-notch SoHo clothing store for those who prefer the modest look mastered in Japan. The Japanese name (Mujirushi Ryōhin) translates to “no-brand, quality goods” making them ideal for folks that aren’t keen on logos.
Muji is among the best stores in SoHo for basics like shirts, pants & dresses. They also have a great collection of home goods and essentials worth perusing. I pop in often when I’m in the area because I love the quality of their items (Muji seems to hold itself to high standards).
![TJ Maxx Best Stores SoHo](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/TJMaxx-9730.jpg)
TJ Maxx
Website: TJ Maxx
Address: 483 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
TJ Maxx has been a staple in my wardrobe for years. As mentioned earlier, I’ve been investing in quality pieces over the years and TJ Maxx is my go-to for a good deal. I especially love their SoHo store because there’s a ton of designer brands to peruse.
But honestly, even if you’re not looking for designer items, you’ll quickly learn that this is one of the most affordable stores in SoHo. TJ Maxx manages to buy name-brand items from manufacturers at a fraction of the cost and the sales get passed down to shoppers, I shop the online store often!

COS
Website: COS
Address: 129 Spring St, New York, NY 10012
COS is one of the most modern clothing stores in SoHo. Sleek lines take center stage, while boxy silhouettes serve as prime outer layers. Muted tones seem to be the theme (although bold pops of color creep in every holiday season). I love shopping at COS for quality basics that will last for years to come (like my favorite winter parka, pictured below).
Fans of H&M will be happy to know that COS is owned by H&M, but COS is tailored more to elegant young professionals. The higher price point comes with better quality, making this one of the best clothing stores in SoHo for those that don’t like fast fashion.
![Display of men's clothes and shoes at Zara, one of the best stores in Soho](https://newyorksimply.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Zara-Soho-09269.jpg)
Zara
Website: Zara
Address: Broadway #503, New York, NY 10012
Zara probably needs no introduction. Founded in Spain in 1975, Zara opened in the US in 1989 and it didn’t take long for word to get out. Women were eager to stock up on stylish basics at affordable prices (t-shirts, blazers, slacks and sweaters).
So much so, that Zara became a destination for out of town visitors, until the brand started spreading to major cities all over the country. Interestingly enough, Zara’s popularity hasn’t wavered much. Their SoHo store is constantly crowded with stylish teens eager to add more staples to their wardrobe.
Women’s Clothing Stores in SoHo
![What to wear in NYC in winter, shopping in SoHo](https://newyorksimply.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/nyc-1003190.jpg)
L’Appartment Sezane
Website: L’Appartment Sezane
Address: 254 Elizabeth St, New York, NY 10012
Sézane is a French brand that has taken the world by storm. Best known for French-chic dresses and dreamy sweaters, most fashionable New Yorkers have a few of these pieces in their closet.
The store is designed to feel like you’re in a cozy Parisian apartment, which only adds to the unique shopping experience. Their seasonal collection is considered a gold standard in the fashion world, so swing by and see what all the fuss is about.
Reformation
Website: Reformation
Address: 62 Greene St, New York, NY 10012
Reformation is one of the most beloved women’s stores in SoHo. It was originally founded in Los Angeles in 2009 as a thrift store, but quickly began making their own clothing. With an emphasis on sustainability, the brand makes clothing from repurposed, low-impact materials. While most companies release earning reports, this SoHo clothing store releases sustainability reports.
The brand is transparent about their successes & failures regarding diversity, climate impact and working conditions. All told, this is a SoHo store I’m happy to support because the company’s values align with my own. Oh, and the super cute dresses don’t hurt either. Here’s the Reformation dress I’m wearing in the picture above, and the dress I just picked up for the holidays.
![Madewell, SoHo Stores](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/MadewellSoHo-9795.jpg)
Madewell
Website: Madewell
Address: 486 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
Madewell was created with one mission in mind: make the best jeans on the planet. Fast forward to today, and Madewell has effectively become one of the most popular stores in SoHo with fashionable shoppers. Selling compliment-worthy dresses, high quality jeans (I own two pairs of these gems) and perfected seasonal tops, I’m a frequent flier at Madewell.
Also worth nothing: This SoHo clothing store participates in Madewell’s famous denim recycling program. Bring a pair of old/unwanted jeans (any brand) for $20 off a purchase of a new pair. Madewell repurposes these old jeans to create insulation for homes in an effort to keep them out of landfills.
![Aritzia SoHo Stores](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/Wolf-Badger-6424.jpg)
Aritzia
Website: Aritzia
Address: 524 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
This trendy women’s clothing store is arguably one of the most popular shops in SoHo. Offering two floors full of quality fashionable pieces, pop into the cafe (called A-OK) if you need a little pause or energy boost.
![Bloomingdale's store in SoHo NYC](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/BloomingdalesSoHo-9668.jpg)
Bloomingdale’s
Website: Bloomingdale’s
Address: 504 Broadway, New York, NY 10012
Bloomingdale’s is one of the most popular luxury retail stores in the country. Only fitting that their SoHo store is one of the largest, too. You’ll find racks of luxury designer pieces rubbing elbows with more affordable brands.
The beauty counter on the bottom floor is nothing short of impressive, but continue making your way up the various floors for whatever piques your interest. Also, Bloomingdale’s has great sales a few times a year, I typically pop in to peruse the sale racks at this locale.
Men’s Clothing Stores SoHo
![Entrance to Bonobos men's clothing store, shopping in Soho](https://newyorksimply.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Bonobos-Soho-09266.jpg)
Bonobos
Website: Bonobos
Address: 35 Crosby St, New York, NY 10013
Bonobos started off as an online retailer but it didn’t take long for a brick-and-mortar shop to follow. The brand focuses on quality men’s gear that fit the bill for date night casual attire. The clothing collection is best described as modern, tailored more for working professionals. The best part? There’s a stylist on location (appointments must be made in advance), to help guide you in the right direction.
![Rag & Bone Soho store](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/nyc-1003687-1.jpg)
Rag & Bone
Website: Rag & Bone
Address: 119 Mercer St, New York, NY 10012
Inspired by a blend between British tailored suits and American work gear, Rag & Bone is one of the best stores in SoHo for men’s clothing. Think stylish denim, flannels and gorgeous boots.
You get what you pay for, and Rag & Bone isn’t billed as affordable. However, the quality is excellent and the clothes will last a while (my husband has two boots and one pair of jeans going on 3+ years).
![Fashionable woman in jeans, a leather jacket, and a purple baseball cap walking in front of the window displays of Sandro's flagship store, one of the best stores in Soho](https://newyorksimply.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Sandro-SoHo-09203.jpg)
Sandro
Website: Sandro
Address: 117 Prince St, New York, NY 10012
Sandro encapsulates the effortless Parisian-chic look, proven by the fact that they boast 600+ locations worldwide. A clean aesthetic, built upon a foundation of neutral colors put them on the map, but it’s the outlandish designs and seasonal pops of color that keep them fresh from season to season.
Sandro is one of the most popular boutique stores in SoHo, with prices to match (shirts start at $150+). But, quality over quantity is the mindset of this brand, so you won’t need to replace these items often.
![Three display mannequins for the J Crew Mens shop in Soho, shopping in Soho](https://newyorksimply.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/J-Crew-Mens-Shop-Soho-09267.jpg)
J. Crew Men’s Shop
Website: J. Crew
Address: 484 Broadway, New York, NY 10013
Make no mistakes, there’s no shortage of great men’s stores in SoHo. The sheer volume on offer is overwhelming. Between new-to-you designers and tried-and-true classics, sometimes the best bet is to start with a place you already know.
Enter J. Crew, a beloved American brand established in 1983. Reasonably priced quality pieces reign supreme at this SoHo location, with staples like wool coats, cashmere sweaters and thick chinos taking center stage.
When the brand originally started, it began by designing Ralph Lauren-like clothing for those who didn’t have Ralph Lauren-like money. It’s hard to compete with some of the city’s most stylish men, but J. Crew Men’s Shop levels the playing field just a bit more.
![Best men's stores in SoHo, ARI](https://newyorkdearest.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/AriSoHo-9966-1.jpg)
ARI
Website: ARI
Address: 471 W Broadway, New York, NY 10012
Ari is a high-end Italian retailer with an emphasis on quality pieces meant to last a lifetime. But, as you know, there’s plenty of designer stores in SoHo, what makes ARI special? Well, for starters, if you’ve ever been interested in the brand, their SoHo store is one of only 3 locations in the US (Miami & Beverly Hills have the honors as well).
Though tipping more towards luxury, the store has a relaxed and casual vibe, which makes it less-intimidating to peruse for a bit. In addition to quality basics, ARI makes beautiful suede/cashmere blend jackets (the star of the show!).

Likewise, Kith has collaborated on shoe designs with Dr. Marten and Adidas. Check out the SoHo location to see if there’s any seasonal collabs worth knowing about.
