The (Brief) History on Speakeasies in New York City
The history of speakeasies in New York City dates back to the Prohibition era (1920s) when the sale, production and transportation of alcohol was illegal. But nobody loves the nightlife like stalwart thirsty locals, so the city became a hotspot for illegal establishments known as speakeasies.
These bars were hidden in basements and behind unassuming storefronts, with secret passwords required for entry. They became important social hubs for libations and rebellious camaraderie. Despite the constant threat of police raids, speakeasies in NYC flourished.
Why is it called a speakeasy? It’s assumed the name comes from speaking quietly, or “easily,” about the establishments in public to avoid attracting attention from neighbors and police.

Bathtub Gin

Hidden behind a nondescript door inside a coffee shop, this Prohibition-style bar is a nod to classic 1920s speakeasies, complete with a bathtub centerpiece gesturing to the era’s gin-making practices.
During prohibition, gin was made in tall bottles that couldn’t be topped off in the sink, so people filled gin the bathtub. Although bathtub gin is associated with an amateur and low-quality spirit, the libations at this trendy New York City speakeasy are anything but.
The variety of expertly-crafted cocktails span the gamut (contrary to what the name implies, gin is not the only spirit on the menu). I suggest starting with a seasonal cocktail and asking for some direction from there, the bartenders always have something exciting up their sleeves.
Reservations are strongly encouraged (walk-ins welcome, but seating is limited).
Garfunkel’s

Garfunkel’s is tucked behind a vintage bank vault at the Burgary restaurant on the Lower East Side. This secret NYC bar was named after a notorious banker-turned–fugitive who conducted illegal banking schemed from this venue in the 1920s.
The bar employs a strict reservation-only policy, and scoring a table is no easy feat. But the effort pays off because the meticulously-crafted cocktails are nothing short of excellent. If you’re looking for unique libations, I recommend the Upmann the Banker, which is made with cigar-infused scotch, amaro, angostura and Orinoco bitters.

Attaboy occupies the former space of New York City’s most famous speakeasy, Milk & Honey (now closed). Milk & Honey pioneered the craft cocktail and speakeasy movement in NYC, so Attaboy sits on hallowed ground.
Helmed by two expert Milk & Honey bartenders, this popular NYC speakeasy crafts cocktails tailored to individual preferences (there’s no menu in sight). Simply tell the bartender what you’re after and watch the magic unfold.
Getting in is the hardest part because the bar doesn’t accept reservations, the only way to score a coveted. Seat is to add your name to the wait list (the wait can be 2+ hours long during weekends). But hey, if you consider yourself a cocktail connoisseur, making a pilgrimage to Attaboy is non-negotiable.
Thyme Bar

Crafting stunning libations that look like works of art, Thyme Bar is located inside the cellar of Patisserie Chanson, a literal subterranean gem. Each cocktail has a theme, which adds a playful element to the night, like the alcoholic iced tea served in a golden genie lamp. This definitely one of the fanciest speakeasies in New York City, don’t miss it!
Amor Y Amargo

No seats, no tables, just award-winning cocktails so good every sip feels like an adventure. Moonlighting as a storefront selling bitters, walk toward the back to find one of the best speakeasies in New York City.
Offering an exciting range of expertly-crafted cocktails, this bar is the go-to spot for locals who appreciate top-notch libations and relaxed vibes. My friend is a bartender at one of the city’s top bars and considers Amor Y Amargo his favorite spot for cocktails.
Turns out he’s not the only one, Amor Y Amargo was ranked the 23rd best bar in North America in 2022. Come for the variety of amaro and specialty liquors, stay for the great service – you’re bound to have a great time at this local gem.
The Lab at Patent Pending

The Lab at Patent Pending takes inspiration from the building’s most famous resident, Nikola Tesla. Accessed through a hidden door in a café, marked only by a sign reading ‘Patent Pending,’ the bar transports you into a world that echoes Tesla’s inventions and electrical experiments.
The Lab’s cocktail menu is neatly categorized into themes like ‘Energy’ ‘Vibration’ and ‘Frequency.’ If you’re looking for suggestions, I’m partial to the Suspicions of Espionage (Peruvian Pisco, Single Malt Scotch, wildflower, passion fruit and egg white) and the Radio Waves (Tequila, Mezcal, basil, Thai chile, lime and cucumber).
Apotheke

Ask locals about the best speakeasies in New York City and the honest ones will mention Apotheke. The appeal at this Manhattan bar is the overall vibe, mixologists in lab coats create inspired cocktails with the precision of pharmacists.
Cocktails are referred to as prescriptions, feeding into the whole old-school European apothecary experience. The menu is broken down into six distinct sections. Health & Beauty, Aphrodisiacs, Pain Killers, Euphorics, Stimulants and Stress Relievers.
Regardless of the drink you order at this classy speakeasy in NYC, one thing is certain, you can’t be disappointed.
Little Branch

Enter through the nondescript corner door of an abandoned building and you’ll be transported to a dimly-lit, jazz-infused subterranean cocktail bar. The feel is relaxed yet sophisticated (perfect for date night), with live jazz select nights of the week.
Little Branch’s reputation as one of the best speakeasies in NYC is well earned, it’s perfect for anyone on the hunt for a refined yet unpretentious night on the town. Just know that the seating capacity at this walk-in only establishment is (intentionally) limited, it’s meant to be intimate.
Please Don’t Tell

Please Don’t Tell is hidden behind a phone booth at a popular hot dog joint called Crif Dogs. Evoking the thrill of discovery that dates back to the Prohibition era, entering requires stepping into a photo booth. And dialing a number that sets off a buzzer to a host on the other side of the wall.
An experience reminiscent of the clandestine operations rife during Prohibition, it’s a fun way to kick off the night. Once inside, don’t fight the dark and moody vibes, it’s the perfect backdrop for enjoying excellent cocktails with good friends.
Employees Only

The West Village has the lion’s share of charming cocktail bars and speakeasies, but there’s something special about Employees Only. A staple in the neighborhood’s nightlife scene since 2004, you’ll need to walk past a tarot card reader before being granted access to one of NYC’s best hidden bars.
Employees Only was rated the 30th best bar in North America and 47th best in the world. Whether you’re after tried-and-true classics or. It’s one of the most popular speakeasies in New York City, so make reservations ahead of time.
Good to know Employees Only doesn’t allow baseball caps, flip flops, athletic jerseys, gym sneakers or athletic apparel.
