Village Vanguard is an intimate West Village jazz club that has been serenading New Yorkers since 1935. This intimate basement club started as a venue for folk music and poetry but quickly evolved into a jazz stronghold by the 1950s.
What makes the Vanguard truly remarkable is its incredible legacy in the jazz world. This venue has hosted a staggering number of live recordings (more than 100 albums have been recorded here), from jazz legends like John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and Sonny Rollins.
The unique triangular shape of the venue (apparently) contributes to the excellent acoustics, making it a popular venue for some of the biggest names in jazz. With a capacity of just over 100, every seat at the Vanguard feels intimate. This iconic jazz club in New York City isn’t just a club; it’s a pilgrimage site for jazz enthusiasts around the world.
Note on the drink minimum: There’s a one-drink minimum per person, but the beverage doesn’t have to be alcoholic, you can order soft drinks, juices or bottled water as well.
The Django

Cover Charge & Minimum: $35 per person with 2-drink minimum
Located in the Roxy Hotel, The Django is a popular subterranean jazz club named after renowned jazz musician Django Reinhardt. The brainchild of nightlife virtuosos Vito Dieterle and Joseph Schwartz, the club features vaulted ceilings, exposed brick walls, and dramatic vintage lighting.
Inspired by the endearing Parisian jazz clubs, the vibes are chic and sophisticated. Considered one of the best jazz clubs in New York City, spending an evening at The Django is a highlight of visiting Tribeca.
Local’s Recommendation: The food leaves much to be desired so grab dinner beforehand.
Blue Note Jazz Club
Website: Blue Note Jazz Club
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Location: 131 W 3rd St, New York, NY
Cover Charge & Minimum: $40-60 per person with $20 minimum spend
Since opening in 1981, Blue Note has been a cornerstone of the city’s jazz scene, hosting legendary performances by renowned artists, like Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Kenny Garrett and Lionel Hampton. Fun fact: Ray Charles performed at Blue Note for a full week every year, which only adds to the club’s prestige.
But, as with all good things, fame comes at a price. Blue Note is one of the most expensive jazz clubs in NYC, you’ll be paying a premium to enjoy a show. Blue Note’s impact extends far beyond the jazz club in New York. This beloved institution has spread globally to cities like Tokyo, Milan and São Paulo.
Something to note: Starting in 2011 the Blue Note Jazz Club has held an annual festival every June in NYC called the Blue Note Jazz Festival. More than a dozen venues participate, for more info click here.
Smalls Jazz Club
Website: Smalls Jazz Club
Neighborhood: Greenwich Village
Location: 183 W 10th St, New York, NY
Cover Charge: $35 Sunday – Thursday, $40 Friday & Saturday
Drink Minimum: One-drink minimum per person.
Founded by Mitchell Borden, a former Navy submariner and jazz violinist with an ear for talent, Smalls was intended to be an inclusive space for musicians. Borden’s approach was unique: he focused more on the music and the artists rather than profit, creating a haven for burgeoning jazz talent.
The club was a simple, raw basement space without a liquor license. Visitors were invited to bring their own beer while enjoying some of the best jazz in New York City. Things have changed since those early days (the club got a liquor license and enforces a one drink minimum), but the core of the jazz club stays the same. It’s all about the music here.
Aptly named, the seating capacity is limited to 74 people, so if there’s a performer you’re keen to see make sure to book tickets in advance. However, it’s also worth nothing that Smalls Jazz Club has a walk-in policy too. Depending on availability, you can get discounted tickets for $25 at the door.
Birdland Jazz Club
Website: Birdland Jazz Club
Neighborhood: Midtown
Location: 315 W 44th St., New York, NY
Cover Charge & Minimum: $20-40 per person with $20 minimum spend
Opened in 1949, Birdland was a jazz mecca that attracted the era’s greatest musicians. The initial years were marked by incredible performances from jazz legends like Count Basie, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. The mind-boggling talent made this NYC jazz club a hot-spot for celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando and Marilyn Monroe.
The success was short lived with the rise of Rock & Roll in the 1960s, leading to a decline for Birdland’s original location on 52nd Street (an area with a thriving jazz scene from a decade ago). The original location closed in 1965 and it took two decades for the club to reopen on the Upper West Side. The storied NYC jazz club relocated back to Midtown in 1966, where it thrives to this day.

Yes, the long wait is a bear, but Tomi is easily one of the most impressive jazz clubs in New York City, and you won’t want to miss it. The cozy, speakeasy-like ambiance amplifies the exclusivity, with cozy tight spaces adding an extra dash of New York Charm. Unlike most of the places mentioned on this list, Tomi Jazz is equal parts restaurant and jazz club.
Offering delicious Japanese-inspire cuisine, the food is top-notch. Clear standouts are the cod roe spaghetti and omurice. It’s a great spot for date night! Live music starts around 6pm most days, and there’s a $10 cover charge during the weekends (Friday – Sunday) along with a two-hour maximum stay per table (Thursday- Sunday).
Local’s Advice: Show up (really) early before doors open to try and grab a spot at one of the best jazz clubs in NYC. Doors open at 5:00 PM daily, but chances are there will already be a small line forming. Your patience will pay off when you’re one of the first to grab a seat.
