It's on 7 of my lists. Each entry below is what I wrote about it there, with my verdict on that list, the fullest first.
A few years ago the chocolate babka at Breads Bakery was named the best in New York City, and the rest (as they say) was history. Dark chocolate ribbons of Nutella delicately folded into layers of airy dough, this dessert isn’t for the faint of heart (it makes a great souvenir, by the way).
But the chocolate babka alone isn’t what makes this one of the best Jewish bakeries in NYC. Rather, it’s the fact that everything on the menu is top-notch. From classics like chocolate croissants to traditional Jewish baked goods like rugelach, there’s a reason Breads Bakery has spread to 8 locations in the city since opening in 2013.
My adviceBreads Bakery recently opened a new bakery on the Upper East Side. They chose to create a baked good exclusive to the location and landed on a delicious twist on the iconic black-and-white cookie. I would drive an hour out of the way for this thing, it’s one of my favorite deserts in the entire city, I can’t recommend it enough.

Unpopular opinion. Hot take. NYC’s dessert scene is more exciting than its fine dining scene right now.
Breads Bakery has grown like wildfire since opening in 2013, mostly thanks to their award-winning chocolate babka. If you’re not familiar with babka (I wasn’t before moving to NYC) it’s a traditional Jewish bread/pastry made from yeast dough folded with cinnamon or chocolate.
This incredible Jewish treat could launch a thousand ships, it’s so delicious. But the chocolate babka isn’t the only thing this Upper West Side bakery has mastered, quite the contrary. Anything you order at Breads is. I visit every chance I get and recommend it to all my out-of-town guest.
The reason I feel confident calling Breads Bakery one of the best gift shops in NYC is thanks to the pre-packaged goods.
The babka is hands-down some of the best in the city and what makes it even better is the fact that you can walk in, pick up an already packed loaf and be on your way. It’s a no-fuss gift that everyone loves and tastes so good.
My classics are the hearty cookies from Levain Bakery and the chocolate babka from Breads Bakery.
Bread’s Bakery on the Upper East Side (this famous NYC treat is exclusive to this location), hands down offers one of the most memorable black and white cookies in the city.
While Bread’s Bakery is tough top, there are plenty of other fantastic places in the city to enjoy this iconic NYC food.
