Diner (85 Broadway) sits under the Williamsburg Bridge in a converted 1920s dining car, and it’s been a neighborhood anchor since 1998. The menu changes daily based on what’s fresh, which means you can’t plan your order in advance. The server tells you what they’re making. You pick from that.

This sounds intimidating but it’s actually liberating. Everything on the menu is good because they only put things on the menu they feel good about that day. The burger (when it’s available) is one of the best in Brooklyn. The egg dishes are always well done. The vibe is effortlessly cool without trying too hard.

Brunch runs Saturday and Sunday. They don’t take reservations for brunch, so showing up at 10am is the move.

Embracing simplicity, Diner crafts classic American breakfast dishes out of a refurbished dining car. Opened in 1991, the popular Williamsburg restaurant is often billed as a pioneer of the city’s obsession with locally-sourced ingredients. With a commitment to sustainable ingredients, the menu rotates with the seasons. Not surprisingly, the salads deserve special mention, as does the semolina pancake and heirloom tomato sandwich (a summer staple).
