Don Angie has long been on my list of West Village restaurants to try, but reservations are hard to score so I put it on the back burner for a while. Then, one random Sunday, my husband I found ourselves in the neighborhood and decided to try our luck with the hostess, who informed us two bar seats would open around 6pm, perfect!
We asked the bartender for recommendations and, without missing a beat, told us the Chrysanthemum salad and lasagna for two were non-negotiable orders for first timers. We obliged and holy cow, that Chrysanthemum has been on my mind since (does anybody know where I can buy Chrysanthemum?).
Table cleared, we awaited the main event, the famed pinwheel lasagna. Employing enough cheese to end world. Perfectly balanced, this nothing like the stuff most of us grew up eating. We were so impressed with the meal, we asked for more recommendations.
The bartender suggested a few “chef favorites” we’re keen to try on our return visit. Until then, the pleasant memory of the sharp Chrysanthemum salad and velvety lasagna will have to tide me over.
The only thing worse than not getting a reservation to Don Angie’s is getting one, trying it, and then chasing that high again but not being able to get a second reservation.
How can I eat anything else when I’ve seen the light?
This is one of the few times I’m glad a restaurant lost its Michelin Star (which Don Angie did in 2023). I’m hoping it makes the New York City restaurant’s reservations a little easier to get. I’m just dying to get back to that lasagna!
