As someone who’s spent their fair share of time in bars in this city, The Penrose is special. Stepping into The Penrose any time of day you can’t help but immediately recognize you’re in a top notch spot. This bar checks all the right boxes, beautiful, vibey, and affordable.
If you don’t find room at the first bar near the entrance, head to the second dimly lit bar in the back.
Regarding happy hour, admittedly the price cuts alone wouldn’t quality The Penrose as one of the best happy hour deals on the Upper East Side, it’s still one of my favorites, given the overall experience. The UES happy hour special runs from 3 pm to 7 pm, offering $2 off beer, wine, and well drinks.

To the untrained eye, it’s hard to believe that a neighborhood bar could double as one of the best brunch restaurants on the Upper East Side, but here we are. As far as brunch fare goes, the cinnamon french toast is an easy favorite. Made with brioche, vanilla cream cheese. If you’re the savory sort, the hot honey fried chicken sandwich is not to be missed.
Pair your meal with an expert breakfast cocktail (the Bloody Mary is excellent) and make the most of your visit.

Not surprisingly to those who have been, The Penrose is one of the best bars in the Upper East Side. The delicious food and cozy rustic vibe create an ideal setting for a romantic date night.
When you walk in you’ll notice a bar immediately to your left. If it’s full, keep walking to the back bar which is more dimly lit and sports an even swankier vibe.
