As someone who’s spent their fair share of time in bars in this city, The Penrose is special. Stepping into The Penrose any time of day you can’t help but immediately recognize you’re in a top notch spot. This bar checks all the right boxes, beautiful, vibey, and affordable.

If you don’t find room at the first bar near the entrance, head to the second dimly lit bar in the back.

Regarding happy hour, admittedly the price cuts alone wouldn’t quality The Penrose as one of the best happy hour deals on the Upper East Side, it’s still one of my favorites, given the overall experience. The UES happy hour special runs from 3 pm to 7 pm, offering $2 off beer, wine, and well drinks.

One of my personal favorites is their dirty-pickle martini.

You should know that The Penrose is strictly 21+ after 8pm and reservations are only available for parties of 5 or more.

A reliable neighborhood dive bar known for it’s lively atmosphere and inexpensive drinks, The Stumble Inn is my friend’s go-to Upper East Side happy hour spot.

Pretty much any night of the week you’ll find the Stumble popping with a younger local crowd looking to cut loose after the work day. Makes sense, considering the bar’s happy hour might be the best the neighborhood in terms of value.

For starters, there’s a half off the entire bar “happy” happy hour (you read that right) Monday to Thursday from open to 4pm. If that’s too early for you then the regular happy hour is still great featuring $5 Drafts, $6 Vodka Seltzers, & $3 Budweiser, Bud Light, & Bud Light Seltzer Cans.

Oozing saloon vibes, The Pony Bar brings the spirit of the wild west to the posh Upper East Side. Starting weekdays at 4:20pm, this New York City happy hour spot offers $7 draft beer, well drinks and wine.

The Five Lamps is one of the best Upper East Side happy hour spots if you’re looking to score a deal. You can expect $2 tacos and $6 margaritas on taco Tuesday (after 4PM) or enjoy a burger and a beer for only $20 on Wednesday.

If you’re looking to try your hand at trivia you need to head to The Five Lamps. Every Thursday at 7:30 PM the bar hosts the NYC Trivia League for good ol’ fashion neighborly competition (prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams).

Canyon Road has been around since 1985 and while I can’t speak as to how it was back then, I do know that it’s currently serves up one of the best happy hours on the Upper East Side.

This a place you’ll find folks gathering after work to unwind over a pint. In 2016, Chef Ruperto Ramirez took over ownership and with that created a menu of authentic Mexican food, an ode to his upbringing.

Festival Cafe has given the farm-to-table movement a twist, instead opting to go farm-to-bar. As one of the best bars on the Upper East Side it also doubles as one of the best happy hour spots. Every drink here is crafted using natural, responsibly sourced ingredients.

The bar even takes it a step further by publishing a list of the farms and businesses they work with, which adds an admirable level of transparency. It’s easy to enjoy a drink that you know was made using clean ingredients.

The same high-quality standard translates to the food too. Both the drink and food menus rotate frequently to utilize ingredients that are in season, so popping into this UES happy hour spot is always a treat.
