Scarr’s has been milling flour on-site (an unusual practice) since opening in 2016, which speaks to the joint’s dedication to making the best pizza in New York City. Offering traditional NYC slices (they’re huge, folding required) alongside Sicilian slices (focaccia-like crust), the airy dough serves as the ideal canvas for high-quality toppings and velvety sauces.
In a city where good food sometimes comes at the expense of good service, Scarr’s stands a mile above the rest (the staff are consistently awesome). Also, the retro ’80s-inspired decor definitely evokes old school vibes.
My go-to slice is a toss-up between the classic cheese ($4) and pepperoni grandma slice ($6). I consider this one of the best cheap eats in New York City.
Types of pizza.Traditional NYC slices, whole pies available too.
Scarr’s Pizza is known for its retro and nostalgic atmosphere, with vintage decor and a throwback feel. Folks appreciate the simplicity of the menu. The dough is made in-house, contributing to the authentic and delicious taste of the pizzas.
The Sicilian grandma slice is satisfying but the pepperoni takes the cake. The large slices demand to be folded and the thinly stretch dough is the ideal canvas for the really good marinara sauce and quality toppings. If there’s one thing this Lower East Side restaurant got right, it’s the way the cheese and marinara sauce form a harmonious union without overwhelming.
Unpopular opinion. Hot take. This one of those NYC food experiences that tourists overlook but locals swear by.
Operating as both a slice shop and a sit-down restaurant, Scarr’s Pizza is one of the best pizzerias in NYC and a must-stop while exploring the Lower East Side. The Sicilian grandma and classic pepperoni are incredible.
The large slices demand to be folded, and the thinly stretched dough (Scarr’s mills their flour on-site) is the ideal canvas for the beautiful marinara sauce and quality toppings.
Moreover, in a city where good food sometimes comes at the expense of good service, Scarr’s stands a mile above the rest. They keep the slice shop’s line moving efficiently, and the table service is attentive.
