Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858 in a brownstone located at 28th East 20th Street, where he spent the first 14 years of his childhood. When the neighborhood became too commercial for his family’s liking, they moved uptown to 57th Street.
Although the original building was demolished in 1916, a replica was promptly rebuilt after Roosevelt’s death in 1919. Architect Theodate Pope Riddle reconstructed the replica using the neighboring row house as a model. The house was refurbished with original furnishings from the Roosevelt family, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Roosevelt’s early life.
Access to the museum is available through guided tours, which are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Tours are limited to 15 people and last approximately 30 minutes. You can tour the ground floor gallery while waiting for the tour to start, it’s pretty small but you can see some of his journals and the exact shirt he wore during an assassination attempt (bullet holes and all).
I bet you weren’t expecting to see the birth place of a president on a list of it!
Theodore Roosevelt was born in a townhouse located at 28th E. 20th Street on October 27, 1858. His family lived in this home until 1872, which means Teddy was raised in this house from birth to 14 years old. Considering Theodore Roosevelt was the first U.S. president to be born in New York City, it’s no wonder why this important building is deemed a National Historic Site.
