My introduction to Aux Merveilleux de Fred can be traced back to a serendipitous evening in Paris. En route to dinner, I decided to exercise my decision-making prowess by spoiling my appetite before our reservations kicked in with a few merveilleux.
French for “marvelous” these aptly-named treats consist of airy meringue welded together with whipped cream and a dusting of chocolate. Marvelous indeed, I enjoyed the treats so much I returned the next day for more (longtime readers know I have no chill around baked goods).
Turns out I could have eased off a bit, I had no idea they opened a bakery in the West Village. Opt for the mini merveilleux during. Don’t sleep on the hand-filled mini waffles either, especially if the rum flavor graces the menu.
Fabrique Bakery
Fabrique dishes up some of the best baked goods in Greenwich Village. Made from scratch daily, these heavenly creations can be smelled from blocks away. Originally from Stockholm, this Swedish bakery has locations in London and New York City, the neighborhood is lucky to have them.
The dense cardamom buns are a must-try. I think of them more like a cross between cinnamon rolls and pull-apart bread, they’re absolutely irresistible.
I love the energy in here, especially on weekday mornings when it’s mostly locals grabbing their usual orders.

Since opening in 2014, Mah-Ze-Dahr has risen to the top of most “best bakeries in NYC lists” within a mere seven years. No easy feat in a city teeming with excellent bakeries, competition is steep. The owner, Umber Ahmad is a James Beard Award semi-finalist (a huge deal in the food world) who left the lofty confines of the financial world to purse her dream of baking.
Banker-turned-baker, Ahmad’s talent shines through in everything she touches. The chocolate cake, aptly called The Devil in Ganache, is known to induce dreams months later. The carrot cake? Well, that makes me want to crawl over the register and kiss the chef.
There’s no denying that Mah-Ze-Dahr is one of the best bakeries in the West Village, but don’t just take my word for it, order a slice next time you’re in the area.

Magnolia became one of the most popular bakeries in the West Village after being featured on Sex and the City. The 30 second cameo forever changed the trajectory of this beloved bakery, which spread to a handful of outposts throughout the city.
But the West Village locale is the original, so it’s worth a visit. The bakery is best known for decadent cakes and cupcakes, but it’s the banana pudding that steals the show for yours truly. I never pass on the opportunity to split a cup while exploring the neighborhood with a girlfriend in tow.

The second outpost of a popular Upper West Side pastry shop, Barachou specializes in cream puffs and French pastries. The West Village bakery is in a larger space, giving Rebecca Tison (the founder) an opportunity to play around with more complex pastries like Paris-Brest and Vanilla Flan Patissier. Ordering a few puff pasteries in non-negotiable, but the croissants are great too (some of the best in the city).
You can tell they put thought. I usually order the signature dish and have never been let down.

Warm and inviting, Mille-Feuille is my favorite French bakery in the West Village. The bakery isn’t very large, but. Grab whatever piques your interest and head to Washington Park (3 minutes away) to enjoy some prime people-watching.

This bakery is a safe haven for those nursing a sweet tooth in tandem with celiac disease. Cinnamon rolls, bomboloni, eclairs, muffins and cakes, nothing is off limits here.
It’s got that perfect balance of lively without being loud, which is harder to find in this city than you’d think. Don’t overlook the signature dish here.
