I recently took a stroll through my favorite neighborhood during my favorite time of year, the charming West Village in autumn. There’s never a shortage of fun things to do in the West Village, but something about autumn makes this neighborhood sing.
These photos were taken the last weekend in October and I wanted to share them here, for anyone curious about what autumn in the West Village looks like. There were pumpkins on the brownstone stoops and Halloween decorations were in full swing — and all was right with the world.
Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.

Strolling the West Village in the Fall
The West Village is a fun place to explore any time of year, but especially so in October and November. Long after the Halloween decorations come down and well before the Christmas decorations creep in. Here’s a few more random photos from my walk through Greenwich Village in autumn.

Where exactly is the West Village in New York City?
Great question, and one that is often debated.
The West Village is a neighborhood in the western-most section of Greenwich Village. Most New Yorkers refer to the whole of Greenwich Village as West Village or The Village, when in reality, the West Village is an actual section within the larger Greenwich Village neighborhood.
It’s confusing, so here’s a map (left: Greenwich Village, right: West Village)
See how Washington Square Park isn’t technically in the West Village? Essentially, everything west of 6th Avenue is West Village territory.
FAQ – Visiting the West Village in Autumn
The must-see sights in the West Village during autumn include: Washington Square Park, Grove Street, Greenwich Village, & Christopher Street.
A couple of hidden gems in the West Village in the fall include: Dante for Martinis, Bar Pisellino for Hot Toddys, Tartine for BYOB dinner, and Emmett’s on Grove for pizza.
