New York City’s only Michelin Star Indian restaurant, Semma, is a West Village destination. The restaurant shines a spotlight on South-Indian fare, which is rare in America. The ambiance is lively and can get a little loud, but it’s one of the most affordable Michelin-starred restaurants in New York City, so folks are excited.
All dishes (save for one) are under $50, and there’s plenty to choose from that are sub-$40. The lone exception is the $140 Kanyakumari Nandu Masala, or Dungeness crab for two (which must be pre-ordered when booking reservations). The Gunpowder Dosa ($21) is a rice and lentil crepe that’s developed a loyal fanbase and is a can’t-miss item on the menu.
South Indian fare in the coziest of settings? Where do I sign up? Semma is the only Michelin Star Indian restaurant in the U.S., and that success has led it to become one of the most impossible reservations to get in New York City.
I’ll leave you with a pro-tip: order the Gunpowder Dosa. It’s a rice and lentil crepe that will bring you to your knees and make any stress incurred during the reservation process all worth it. Reservations are available two weeks out.
