What I order

The Williamsburg location is my favorite because you eat right on the waterfront with the Manhattan skyline behind you. The Prospect Park location is great too, especially if you want to turn it into a full park day.

Good to know

Get the dumplings from whichever dumpling vendor has the longer line; they are usually at the Prospect Park location and they are worth waiting for. Prospect Park location: Breeze Hill, enter at East Drive and Lincoln Rd

Date Fridays at the World Trade Center | Saturdays in Williamsburg | Sundays in Prospect Park

If you consider yourself to be a foodie, even in the slightest, one of the best things to do in New York City in August is to welcome the return of Smorgasburg, also referred to as “The Woodstock of Eating.”

Smorgasburg is the largest weekly outdoor food market in the U.S. Vendors from all across the Big Apple pitch canopies and come together enabling you to try a variety of the city’s best cuisines all in one place.

The event is hosted in three NYC neighborhoods. On Fridays they set up shop outside the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Saturdays is the original (and most popular) location in Williamsburg Brooklyn and Sundays they’re in Prospect Park (also in Brooklyn).

With more than 60 vendors you’ll find a broad variety of eats. If you do it right you’ll have to be rolled home. Plus, the portions at Smorgasburg are usually on the smaller side, enabling you to try a plethora of options.

One of the best things to do in New York City in August is meeting up with friends and jumping from vendor to vendor trying all the delicious food.

This is one of the most popular events in New York City in August, drawing 20,000, 30,000 visitors every weekend!

My spring bucket list

It usually reopens in April and it is one of my favorite things about warm weather in New York.

What I wrote thereFold it away

Smorgasburg is the massive open-air food market that runs on weekends in Williamsburg (Saturdays at Marsha P. Johnson State Park) and Prospect Park (Sundays). It usually reopens in April and it is one of my favorite things about warm weather in New York.

There are about 100 food vendors and the variety is staggering. You can get Moroccan lamb over rice, mochi doughnuts, Thai papaya salad, wood-fired pizza, Filipino ice cream sandwiches, and Korean corn dogs all in the same 20-minute walk. I always go hungry and I always leave feeling like I might not need to eat for the next two days.

My strategy is to do a full loop first without buying anything. Scope out what’s there. Then go back for your top three. If you buy the first thing you see, you will inevitably walk past something better five minutes later and feel regret. Learn from my mistakes.

The Williamsburg location is my favorite because you eat right on the waterfront with the Manhattan skyline behind you. The Prospect Park location is great too, especially if you want to turn it into a full park day.

It is the largest outdoor food market in the United States and the quality of the vendors is consistently very good in a way that outdoor food markets are not always.

I go most Saturday mornings in summer and treat it as a meal. The ramen burger from when it first appeared here is now elsewhere, but the spirit of trying things from multiple vendors and eating while standing in the sun is the correct approach. This is the best food market experience in New York on a nice day.

What I wrote thereFold it away

Smorgasburg is an outdoor food market that runs from April through October at multiple locations. Williamsburg (Saturdays, East River State Park) and Prospect Park (Sundays, Breeze Hill) are the main ones. There are 75-100 vendors each weekend, and the quality is surprisingly high for an outdoor market.

This is the best food market experience in New York on a nice day. On a rainy day, it doesn’t operate, so check the weather. The vibe is festival-like. People spread out on the grass with plates of food from five different vendors and it’s exactly the kind of afternoon that makes you grateful for summer in New York.

Budget $15-25 per person. Bring cash for some vendors. Go hungry.
