If your morning ends at a desk near Grand Central, Zucker’s at 370 Lexington Avenue is the single smartest choice on this list. It is right at 42nd, hand-rolled and kettle-boiled, they pull espresso from La Colombe, and crucially the counter is built for speed. This is a shop that understands its customer is looking at a watch.
The bagel itself is a damn fine bagel. Not quite the chew of Ess-a-Bagel, but honestly close, and the smoked fish is a cut above what a commuter counter has any right to serve. I have grabbed a nova on a poppy here more mornings than I can count and never once been late because of it.
